Palm: ‘We Can’t Afford to Sell the Pre to the Wrong Customers’

Oh Palm. If you’re going to badmouth potential customers in your secret documents, at least keep them, y’know, secret. The above statement is one of many juicy tidbits inside the Pre Business Launch Guide, a 22-page document “leaked in its entirety” this weekend.

Bottomline: Titled “Sell the Palm Pre to the Right Customer”, the official line is that the Pre is “best suited for non-IT Centric business users.” That sounds to us like the Pre isn’t up to the job of being a proper business smartphone, and it’s for the exact same reason that the iPhone was a hopeless business phone on launch — web apps.

Not self pwnage.. They want to sell to the customer who can actually use Palm Pre effectively.

There is no use of selling it to IT buisness users, they have Treo for that.

PS: Self-pwnage by you not by palm :) ( they don't want customers bad mouthing them). They are saving peoples money and their brand name.

^^Yea right  Pre is an awesome "smartphone" which is not smart enough for IT-business centric users.

Did i metion its better than anyother phone :|

I hate Palm/apple/blackberry devices and myself own a Windows based device ( HTC Touch Diamond)

All i ways saying is that they are doing the right thing, i don't see how you can call it self-pwnage :\

LOL don't bother ultra_vires. Apple Fanboi's just have to make these threads when ever they feel threatened by a competing product. I have seen it quite too often here and on many forums. These days, I just ignore them as a madman's ravings.

There is nothing wrong with ultra's view point. They(Palm) made a phone which isn't very powerful/featureful, now they're adopting a strategy to maximize sales w/o tarnishing their name.

Its a smart move.. Instead of marketing it to IT guys who'll obviously criticise it, they're selling it to peeps who're gonna be okay using a not so powerful phone..

Every phone which is launched by the Big Stores have these instructions delivered to them.

You wouldn't want an audio junkie buying a HTC diamond because it looks sexy and has a touch screen, we have nice Nokia and SE phones for that. If you have reviewers review HTC sets for audio then these sets would get super duper low ratings :)

LoL! Theatened ? :rofl:Pre probably has huge potential to come close to iPhone (which no other phone in the market has). Palm is banking on Pre to save their asses! Its competing with the iPhone and apart from others, it had the attention of many iPhone users whose contracts were ending around the launch time of Pre and were *possibly* looking at the Pre as a replacement. And then they do THIS.

EPIC PHAIL IMO :P

To all Apple anti-fanboys: I wouldnt mind switching to Pre if a GSM model is available and priced competitively and IF it actually is a smart phone :P iPhone, when initially launched, was not one and we all know where it is at the moment.

I don't get it why would you compare these phones.

BlackBerry - They are used for their PUSH Mail and qwerty pads. They rock at that.

Windows Mobile Phone - Exchange server access, a hell lot of programs and Custom Roms .

Iphone - Unbeatable ease of use and touch based navigation.

Be a VFM product Fanboy instead of M$ or Apple fanboi :P

^^ well said man shld always be practical after all its our money n not "bill gates" or "steves" money which is on the line.

Define "Smartphone". If you mean the functionality can be extended by third-party software developers, then yes, the Pre can be programmed for using a simple ActiveX/HTML programming language, and is, for all intents and purposes, a Smartphone.

I am sure you would be honest enough to appreciate the advantages of a native SDK over something like this (WebSDK). Games are not going to be possible using a webSDK (I dont mean crappy board games). Similarly we have to see how much other apps can offer. iPhone was exactly like this when launched initially in 2007 and was ridiculed by everyone by terming it as a gadget only for fashion-conscious people. It is a true smartphone only after they released/opened their Native SDK to public.

iPhone - Smartphone ?

Dont make me laugh

Sure, it can run applications but no multitasking and background apps ?

That's really too paranoid

yeah and a smartphone without a proper filesystem?

But for all its shortcomings the iphone is one adorable device and honestly iff i had that kind of budget for a phone i'd have got myself one.

No point flaming other devices here, each of them was built for a purpose.

^^It's there. There are various 3rd party tools which allow you to browse the filesystem.
