From my POV, PC gaming has been pointless for ages now

I had fallen in the scenario B hell for a brief period approx 2 years ago....
came out of it in a month, and have stuck to scenario A ever since
Scenario A:

A nice Saturday evening, a console (any console, even a PS2), throw in a decent game, a crate of beer, a couple of beanbags and a bunch of friends....
7:00 PM- get the beer, fire the console
8:00 PM: dude, who is ordering the pizza
8:30 PM: gobble gobble gobble....hey, keep the gunk away from the console...and don't spill the beer on the remote

12:30 AM...Dude, I am hungry again...can someone drive down to that all nigher paratha shop and get some parathas

2:00 AM...gobbl gobble gobble again

4:00 AM: F%$&...we are outta beer and I am hungry again
Scenario B:

7:00 PM on A nice saturday evening, a high end PC with a Sixteen core CPU and a 19000XTX and 64 Gig of ram and the latest game title and 2 PC gaming fanatics

8:00 PM: Sweet, games installed, time to frag

8:15 PM: Oh wait, doesn't the framerate feel a bit laggy...let me go install fraps and keep an eye on the frame rates

8:30 PM: Oh c%ap, FRAPS tells me my framerate stutters to 20fps during heavy rendering..let me google for this issue

9:00: Hmm, seems like the beta forceware 210.1 rivers on guru 3d fix this problem..lemme dowload that

10:00 PM: ah, beta drivers installed, now where is that 3d mark benchmark

10:30 PM: Oh now, I get only 15000 3dmark points on my uber GPU while Tommmy/Dicky/Harrys' rig on that elite forum gets 19000 points despite a lower config... now where is that registry tweaking guide.. let's google for that

11:00 PM: Hmm, modified HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_GPU_BLAHBLAHBLAH to x, all set and done... lets fire 3dmark again

11:30: Cool, now I get 19100 points...wait till I post in on the forums and see Tommy turning green

12:00: ah, my uber cool 19100 points Posted..now where is that game we were trying to play

12:30 PM: Oh no, now the screen keeps crashing/game keeps core-dumping
Let's switch back to the original drivers and try OC this b^tch

1:30 AM: Awesome, I managed a 15% Overclock....and a 19250 3d mark score....awesome, just awesome!!!
let's post this on the forums again

2:00 AM...Hahaha, now that poor Tommy will be completely swallowed by the green monster... :dead: time to fire up the game again

2:30: Yeeshhh...what are those artifacts on the screen...maybe I need to reduce the OC before I fry out my GPU :akuma:

3:00 AM: ugh...WTH...After the OC reduction, I get just 18500 points on 3dmark.....

must tweak the registry..... :fatigue:
must change the driver again.... :fatigue:
must run those benchmarks again.... :fatigue:
maybe I should order that water cooling kit... :calich:
maybe I should do a clean windows install.....YESSSS, that should work!!

6:00 AM..WIndows reinstall done...Yawn..must sleep...will try the game again tonight..... :stop:

And the cycle continues..........

sad but true. when u have some friends over or going to someone's place a console is the best thing to game on & have fun. pc can never beat that.

but for sp games etc pc is fun. but atm upgrading pc again n again just doesnt feel worth it.

and now with the wii, scenario A has become even more fun for me...

As for lone single player gaming, well, as long as you are a student and have lotsa spare time, it may be OK to hunch down in a chair and play single player games for hours

Once you start working, and have relatively less spare time, the prospect of single player gaming sounds a little too weirdish to me

computer is for personal use! Consoles are strictly meant for entertainment so many people can game on it at same time

I've found consoles fun when you're racing or for one-on-one combat... with shooters, the level of competence that can be achieved is very limited. PC is exactly the opposite, racing isn't that fun unless you have a cool wheel or an analog stick/pad.

Although, the few lan events I've been to turned out to be a whole lotta fun, more than I would have enjoyed by hooking up my console with *wireless everything* to a 100" plasma TV and 10.1 channel sound - ok ok, I only said that to match his exaggeration :P

currently playing metroid prime- corruption on the wii

a shooter, and a lot more fun than mouse + keyboard shooters

anyway, teh PC gaming vs console gaming debate (and the 16 core/19000xtx exaggerations) apart, tell me truthfully, how often have you fallen into this whole tweak/install/OC/benchmark trap while trying to play a new game on your PC?

edit: Just added some new smilies to the OP..that was fun!

hey what type of console or pc u haev :S

I have a fairly basic PC with a AMD 3200 and a GF6800 card...this is a vestigial remain from the days when I had got involved with scenario B :ashamed:

As for consoles, I have a PS2, PSP (not really a console) and a wii

Finding a console fun with shooters is a personal thing I guess, cause I suck at shooters on a console. However, it makes it really easy for even a 5-yr old so I can't take that away from consoles, which makes it an entertainment device for all ages.

Since you've asked me if I've fallen into that learning cycle you call a trap (bad experience yourself?), well I haven't. When I get new hardware, I spend a few days playing around to figure out it's limitations and testing - only a fool would mess around further trying to squeeze another 1-2% performance *for a better gaming experience* :)

You're confusing yourself with overclocking/tweaking for benchmarking vs. overclocking for gaming... if you don't understand the limitations of your hardware, you will have issues while gaming or even running IE6.

I see your point, But multiplayer at office with PC is so much fun....We have loads of consoles at the lounge but then PC is more convinient somehow coz we are still working in a way...:P
Yeah at home when you invite a frnd over its nice to relax and play on console...but otherwise I like the PC....but maybe the PC thats solely used as an entertainment device is not as much value for money maybe...maybe not...

btw I never get into this OC headache...maybe up it a bit to keep it on its toes...but dont go ...water...OC...tweak...got 0.1 sec faster....nope...I dont...
And yeah shooters with a console aint easy till u get used to...damn mouse is made for shooters...isnt it...easier learning curve...

D-uh..the idea behind the OP is that the gaming on a PC oft degenerates into a benchamarking exercise

You lucky Dawg!!!

LAN Gaming @ office

I agree there...multiplayer on campus used to be amazing fun...but once you are out of campus, how often can you do LAN gaming (with people you know, not Online gaming with some unknown characters in a Sg/US game room) ,...unless of course you are a lucky dawg like Vij :P and can game @ office

LOL, I figured that, which is why I implied that messing around without knowing your hardware's limitations will result in issues... but then I guess you're talking from experience!

And as vij said, for multiplayer there is always LAN/internet gaming... I play Q3 online to this day, not very regular but I still do it and it's still more fun (for me) than inviting some friends over and watching 2 guys play at a time ;)

I agree, Q3 and UT LAN was awesome fun ...

Back in 2001-2, (before hostel rooms got wired as they currently are on most residential campuses), we used to have something called a computer center (for PC/net access) on campus with around 100 PCs in a single hall...

Playing Q3 LAN on that with friends used to be amazing fun....and half of that fun was coz after kicking someones' a$$ on screen, you could walk over and do the same in person too :P

Online gaming (whether on a PC or console) competing against some nameless, faceless character in the ether on the other hand does not even remotely close to that

err..... IMHO nothing like that PC gaming sucks and console gaming rocks or PC gaming rocks or console gaming sucks lol .....

and the thing u have mentioned in scenario B never happned to me.....

i was into console gaming way back in school day ...... have broken at least 3-4 consoles lol ...... still remember how we used to stick to console after coming back from school .......

but in college days the most fun i had in gaming was unreal tournament ..... we had around 16-20 computer on lan :D ..... and most of the computers were normal nothing high end stuff ....... quick session of UT between exam studies was the best refreshment one can get :D ..... we also played lot of CS .....

i guess its not the console or computer that matters :P

A Major factor against Console gaming for me is the cost. So I tend to operate in cycles of Consoles vs PCs.

From the Atari to midrange PC to 8bit system to midrange PC to xbox to midrange PC. Will buy the 360/PS3 after further price drops. I always lag about 6months - 1year behind brand new stuff but I find that I don't mind too much though. :D It saves me money to spend on other things. :hap2:

PS: Apologies in advance, but I cannot resist adding. "Har forum member ka naam tommy nahi hota"

Agreed...unfortunately, it's very difficult if not impossible to arrange that setup where you play on a LAN with people you know :(

LOL...hahaha...

U are saying a rigid Console is superior to a PC only because its easier to set it up fr 2 ppl to play  . As for yr orginal statement

"Consoles are strictly meant for entertainment so a couple of kids can game on it at same time"

currently playing metroid prime- corruption on the wii

a shooter, and a lot more fun than mouse + keyboard shooters

So u mean Metroid whateva > Quake, UT, CS, BF, QW, ?

And if u want to play with a light gun that badly, the arcades have been there forever.

And yr scenario B is stupid exaggeration, if u have a huge ego problem with some tech geek able to squeeze out a couple of extra fps......well thats only yr problem.

but atm upgrading pc again n again just doesnt feel worth it.

Its not yr obligation to upgrade just because Nvidia or Ati has launched a new Dx10 card and a guy name Rio has bought one. A so called aging 1950xt still gives better visuals then consoles :P

Saying as mr Rio said again,

I've found consoles fun when you're racing or for one-on-one combat... with shooters, the level of competence that can be achieved is very limited. PC is exactly the opposite, racing isn't that fun unless you have a cool wheel or an analog stick/pad.

Just because u enjoy casual games MORE then serious games and dnt mind split screening yr tv dosen't mean Console is superior to a PC. From yr point of need a console is obviously a better choice as of me i can't go a week without some serious UT, Quake or Cs sessions :ohyeah:

if u have a huge ego problem with some tech geek able to squeeze out a couple of extra fps......well thats only yr problem.

Awww man... this was meant to be a fun thread :ohyeah:

anyway, Whatever keeps you happy man!

though it would help if you learnt to read and interpret intended exaggerations... :P

You cant beat a pizza, console and a beer, with friends.

nothing would compare to that!

Lotsa beer, pizza, DT live and a dice OC session with Dr.H in the house beats the hell outta that :ohyeah:
