Hi

I am having problems with my system freezing while playing some games. So far I have had problems while playing NFS Underground and Rise of Nations. But other games like NFS UG2, PE5, FIFA 2K5 etc works without any problem. I had reinstalled my OS, even it wouldn't help.

My system config is AMD 64 3000+, Leadtek 6600GT, 1 GB, 330 GB HDD, 400W PSU etc. Any idea why it is freezing..?

could be a power issue or a heating issue.. need more info from ya to help out ,

basic thing to check for heating is check for proper contact between the chip and heatsink (cpu/gpu) blow off all the dust from fans

for psu try using a dmm and check your rails
edit: could be a bug with the game as well. try all the latest patches

Thanks bottle

But if it is a power issue or a heating issue then it should happen while playing other games as well, right? Maybe as you said a bug in the game.

It can be a power issue or heating issue as the problem started first while i was playing Rise of Nations. Maybe the long duration of the game play(i play max 2-3 hrs in a stretch) is causing it.

The 400w SMPS came with the cabinet. The peripherals attached to my system or my full conf would be

AMD Athlon 64 3000+, Leadtek 6600GT, 80GB Seagate, 250 GB Western Digital, 512*2 RAM, Sony DVD Combo, LG H10N DVD RW etc

My cabinet is from Zebronics and is having two cabinet fans as well. Could this still be heating issue..?

i had the same problem with my old computer.
its a problem with the amd processor on a mobo without dual channel ram. it gets confused or something when the ram speeds 400 mhz for 2 sticks of single sided 512mb ram . you have to underclock your ram to 333 mhz and all your games will stop freezing.

if your mobo has dual channel ramslots then i dunno. lol

Thanks arun

My mobo is MSI RS480M2. It does support dual channel memory. My RAM is from pqi (DDR 400). I had bought 512 MB when I got the system, but added another 512 MB stick of the same company within 2 weeks time.

Is the option of underclocking the RAM the way to get around the problem? BTW, how do u underclock the ram and is it safe?

try using some utilities (like everest home) and check the temps of your cpu and gfx card.. also have you checked that the fan is spinning

at least we can eliminate heating that way..

Junk, I had the exact same issue running NFSMW on my old P4... I figured the root cause was the high CPU temps. Applied AS5 and this problem magically went away... hope this helps you.

High graphics card temps could result in a similar problem, but check the CPU first because the 6600GT can take high temps IIRC.

Thanks bottle and Rio

Will check the temperatures of the CPU and GPU.. But my doubt is why is it happening only with a couple of games.. No probs while playing other games as I had mentioned..

Those 2 games are probably stressing your CPU and/or GPU more than the others, causing a system lockup.

Used Everest home as suggested by bottle..

Here are the results

Field Value

GPU 43 °C (109 °F)

CPU 57 °C (135 °F)

GPU 43 °C (109 °F)

GPU Ambient 39 °C (102 °F)

Seagate ST3802110A 37 °C (99 °F)

WDC WD2500BB-00RDA0 31 °C (88 °F)

The results are not after playing any game but after using the system for some 3 hrs of browsing and listening to music.

Thanks Tirthankar

The ambient temperature was normal room temperature. About the CPU fan speed, I had checked that. It was above 2500rpm. Forgot to put it in the last post.

Now all this is suggesting that heating issues are there and I have to do something about that..?

which CPU do you have ??

Depending on that we can tell you whether the CPU temp is ok or not

EDIT: Saw you have an AMD 3000+....

57 deg is INSANE !!! You will kill your CPU with that much heat....

Stop using your comp immediately man..... do something abt those temps...

Most Venices shouldnt cross 44 on load !! Yours is doing 57 at idle...... you are waiting for a disaster to happen !!

Thanks Nikhil

My CPU is AMD 3000+ Venice (1.8GHz). What should I do to reduce the temp? Add any heat sink/fans? Please suggest...

Man, dont you have heat sink attached to the CPU ? Check if its in contact with the CPU or not, this problem might be due to improper seating of heatsink.

Secondly if your PC reaches 57c on idle, i m just thinking what would be the temperatures while you game..I guess 65c is the threshold for venice core CPUs

Regarding your Zebronics PSU which is supposed to be 400W, there are many variants amongst the above model. I have a 400 W zebronics PSU which has a 9A on 12V rail according to the sticker on it (but i still manage to run BIG 6600Gt PCI-E on it :) ), and my friend again has a Zebronics 400W with around 18A on 12V rail. So check your amperage on 12V rail .

Thanks cyrux

I checked my CPU temp again when PC was idle and it is showing 53 C constantly!! It is kind of fixed at that value. And the CPU fan is rotating at 1300 rpm.

I checked the heatsink and i think that it is ok. What to do then? Go for a change of the CPU fan? Please suggest. I am now getting afraid of using the PC after checking these results. :(

fan seed is too low..no doubt ur cpu is getting hot..

check if the fan is making a clicking noise while in rotation..it would be if there is a bearing problem.

also if you are using asus motherboard check if you have q-fan enabled in the bios. if you do..either disable it or lower the cpu threshhold temperature to somewhere around 55-60C.

either use asus pcprobe or everest home sensor to check the voltages at the diff rails..specially the 12v one..

hope this helps..

post back what happens

Edit: see if you can get hold of some AS5 and apply it between the heatsink and the cpu. i havent used it myself but i hear it helps greatly.

Thanks tirthankar and nikhil

I tried reseating the heatsink, but the heatsink would not just come out.. Having real trouble in getting it out. :(

did you even try underclocking your ram?
its perfectly safe. ring up some friend who knows how to use the bios and tell him to help you underclock.
