PC hanging while playing

thanks arun

My RAM is clocked at 200 MHz

Field Value

@ 200 MHz 2.5-4-4-8 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS)

@ 200 MHz 3.0-4-4-8 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS)

The RAM latency timings are not matching though

is your fan still running at 1.3k rpm ? check if theres any fan control or such in the bios and disable it

The fan temp is arnd 1.3k when the CPU temp is arnd 53-55 (idle) but it does increase when the temp goes up..

I will check the BIOS option and see if there is any option to disable the fan control

P.S: Will flashing the BIOS help in any way?

no no no...... Dont do anything first....

Reseat the heatsink....just because you are not able to doesnt mean, nothing will happen....of all probability, the high CPU temp is the problem...

Ok. I had tried removing the heatsink but was not able to. Tried it for sometime. I was a little afraid that I will do something that might harm the CPU. Will give another try and see. I also think that it is because of the heat sink not making contact with the CPU properly.

While trying to remove the heatsink, blow hot air on it using a hair dryer......

This is to make sure that it is not the thermal paste which has hardened and is stuck to the CPU and heatsink surface

see if this helps..

one more thing..if u have never removed a heatsink before..i'd suggest u do not use a screw driver..coz it might slip and if it does..god help your mobo..use your fingers instead..

u r saying that ur fan speed starts going up if the tem reaches arnd 3-54 c...

see if there is a value for a threshhold temp in the bios. if there is..lower it as i suggested..

also as nikhil said..check you heatsibnk seating..

to soften the thermal paste..u might disconnect the fan and power on the pc for a few seconds..not more.

wouldn't really recommend using a hair dryer some of them get pretty hot and some parts on the mobo and such might not be able to take the temps

rather play some games or something to stress the cpu

Well I've managed to remove the heatsink with the help of a hairdrier more than once, else you could try what bottle suggested, but all things said the cpu temp seems to be way to high, , my 3000+ venice runs at 42c @ 2.25Ghz, so u definately need to sort that out, maybe apply some as5.

Ask some technician to help you out , and its seems your fan isnt working preperly , i guess it needs some oiling too...

Thank you all for the suggestions..

I did the following things, but still the temps remain the same

First went to the BIOS and increased the fan speeds for different temperature ranges. The low fan speed was set at 55 C, medium at 60C and max at 65 C by default. Changed the settings to low 45, medium 50 and max 58 C. But the temps remained the same.

Then today gave another try to unseat the heatsink and was successful. Thanks to the link to the video given by Tirthankar. Did not get the AS5, but instead bought CoolMaster thermal compound. Applied it as specified and reseated the heatsink. But even then the temp is still 53C at idle.

I think that maybe its the problem with the heatsink itself. Its the clip type heatsink, but i dont think that the clip system is working properly. So as a result it is not getting proper contact with the proc. Is a change of the heatsink module itself called for? Whatelse can the reason for this temp? Please suggest..

is there any option of disabling fan control from the bios?

if there is..disable it..

a normal working uncontrolled amd fan should rotate at abt 3000 nd above rpm.

if it isnt..then something may be wrong with the fan.

in that case..either try to oil the fan bearings..

this might help in case you are oiling the bearing..

high temp may also be caused by improper ventilation of the case..

how many cabinet fans do you have and how are they placed?

There are two cabinet fans placed on one side of the cabinet. Anyways since the last 3 - 4 days I have been keeping the cabinet open.

Since I changed the fan settings, the CPU fan always rotates at 2.5k rpm + . There is option to disable the fan control. Will try that as well.

open cabinets are not always good unless you have a surce of air blowing directly into it..:)

side fans do not help a lot..also, are they blowing air in or out?

it is best to have a front intake and a rear exhaust..and always have more air going out compared to that you have going in. else the hot air keeps circulating inside the case and that does not help at all

The fans are blowing the air out. Anyways its not making much of a difference as the temps remain the same even if i attach the fan or keep them unattached.

I have to disable the fan control and check. But could it still be a problem with the clip heatsink not making proper contact with the CPU? I felt like that after seeing the heatsink installation video.

Thanks to all for all the suggestions

I removed the fans and oiled the fan bearings as tirthankar told. But still the temps were the same.

So finally thought that I'd give flashing of the BIOS a try. My BIOS version was old and so I downloaded the new version & flashed and voila!!, the problem was solved!!

Now the CPU temp at idle is shown as 36 :) So I think that the problem with the overheating is solved. Thank you all for ur help..

lol buggy msi bios ... thought that the issue was only with my board. congrats anyway

Yeah.. Thanks

Certainly it was a good learning experience.. Was doing R&D on my PC once I reached home after office :)

Thanks to all for ur help.. TE rockz!!!

One more doubt

How could this explain the problem that I started this thread with? About the games hanging? Bugs in the game? Try patching?
