Agreed, i was hoping for a mechanism where given an IMEI one can check some credit agency and get a yes it is clear or no it's not type answer

As said better to avoid samsungs and mi from olx and best bet is to ask the seller to enable developer mode before taking custody of such phones.
Once done better to flash custom rom on such devices.

These are the most common phones on the market. What if you want just those
if there was a way to check if the IMEI was tied then you just move on to the next seller.
You don't say to yourself no Samsung or mi. You find a Samsung or mi that isn't locked.
The custom rom route you propose is assuming the phone is locked already. Most don't want to deal with this flashing business if they can avoid it.
Froma price pov maybe there are savings to be had if you have the skills to workaround it but then its no samsung or mi has you said.

Then better to up your budget, wait for good deals on amazon/fk or buy new ones directly from shops!
And if someone still wanna fall to such scams, he/she its on their destiny.. Treat it like a Vegas gamble!

I hate the sad reality of mobile hardware manufacturers; blocking repairability, software locking in the name of security etc, etc. Whosoever came up with the idea of blocking a device should be shot, it serves no purpose other than willful spite of big finance companies and increasing E-Waste. Blocking the device or not; finance companies get to write off the debt or sell the debt and yet these low-life, treacherous bastards came up with this bullshit. And while this was not enough some smart guy in his early thirties with lots of money keeps launching new mobile brands every five years starting as a flagship killer and then marches on to the same shitty path as the rest of them. Mobile devices need the PC revolution of 80s-90s much more than ever.

This I don't care about mobile tech anymore, my last phone BSOD'd on me, I went to XDA and baught the phone with most (updated) ROMs under 20000 that is it. They are all the same, I don't give a flying f&$k if they look transparent or reviewed by some clickbaity youtuber, or donates to ukraine fund etc. And there is a spearate room reserved in hell for Apple. Remember guys if it was not for PC revolution we wouldn't even know what an SSD was.

Is there a single PC OS where the user is not allowed root status? I can't think of any unless you create accounts with lower privileges which is normal.
Yet on a phone, you have to break into the damn thing to get what you as an owner take for granted on a PC with any OS you care to name.
An operator with root status is a threat and must be prevented. That's is quite a different mindset to those accustomed to PCs

Yup and there needs to be laws for these sort of things. It's a govt's job to protect citizens from this kind of bullshit but I don't trust any govt of any country to empty a glass of water with instructions at the bottom. I hope humanity gets to see better days.

I got one of Mi 11T models but it's not relevant anymore. Xiaomi has recently started giving out 3 major upgrades and given the popularity of Xiaomi.EU ROMs they're often times easy to flash and enjoy some community fanfare, just don't buy some obscure brand/model and you should be good.

Yup still given the number of devices in the wild, they can be kept alive with ROMs for far longer. Xiaomi.EU has been okay'ish. Again I don't buy a brand, anything that makes sense at a particular point in time is alright for me. All I need an update for is security patches, I don't trust these companies (any/all of these bastards) to push a good feature update these days.

This is one of the exploits but then there are others since Mediatek still isn't great on security. You will probably find a lot of other tools exploiting Mediatek SoC.
