Pirated XPs to be "blacked out"

I at this point of time would love to jump to Opensource, but the sheer incompability of most apps and hardware is a MAJOR turn off.

it will be good if this helps turns more people into FOSS and GNU/Linux. :)

It is doubtful that this would happen. People will ALWAYS find a new way to circumvent XP and Vista's anti-piracy shenanigans. I give it a week. Worst case you could install some application/hack that prevents windows from connecting to windows update at all. As much as I love linux (my only OS at home); as long as there isn't a compelling, more practical reason to move to Linux (say being sued by Microsoft) no one is going to settle for an OS that often has trouble making off the shelf hardware (and mostly KILLER software/games) work out of the box. I say this from an experience of over five years. For an average Indian user both OSes (Linux and XP) can be downloaded and the ethical implications are the last reason that would make someone choose Linux over XP. Previous commenters have highlighted my point regarding this.

<OT>BTW is it a good idea to claim one uses pirated copies of an operating system on a public forum? No offense/FUD, just a general query.</OT>

Even my screen is blacking out at startup, then I have to shutdown & restart, this will corrupt many files & create bad sectors in HDD.

Any means to circumvent this, without going in for original OS.

lol............nice reply to the post by viridian

a mass shift towards GNU will obviously help in development of linux based s/w and games........its basically the public mindset........a shift from windows to linux by a large chunk will also help in bringing down windows prices......

xp running good....time for evryone to boycott MS...it wud be nice to see their strategy backfire....considerng the large chunk of windows users using pirated stuff

And why should every one boycott MS ? Is it because MS does not want you to steal their OS, is that it?

If this really works out , i see millions [ or i should say billions :P ] of people going for Linux / Open Source OS .

Not gonna happen. About 5~10% of the people like those who can get their work done without irrespective of the platform or those who cannot afford to buy a copy of the OS will move to Linux, the rest will bi1tch about it a little and get a copy of the Windows in the end.

MS is never gonna go hard on the piracy thing ...
sure they will do things like this to kick up some dust and make news to remind ppl that its not moral and legal way but bottom line is .....they are getting free publicity in the name of piracy
the more ppl use it, the easier it is for companies to buy their OS which is not obscure and will not need training, so more relevant sales.

Personally i think MS cares more about selling OS to companies rather than individuals.

and about moving to linux
"About 5~10% of the people like those who can get their work done without irrespective of the platform "
this no. is bigger than you think

Why would anyone want to install WGA.. There is always an option while updating windows not to install it... No WGA = no mess...

You just have to be cautious while updating Windows maties if using the sparrow's version or else its the noose which will be tighten by Microsoft... :)

Good move..If everyone starts implementing such measures, people can't move to linux even. Do you know you cannot legally play mp3 files on Linux? Same thing with avi movies. What if they start imposing a ban on that too.. Where will you go?

Its true that it's pricy, that is to compensate for the losses by piracy may be.. May be this will bring about a balance.

Wrong!

Its not legal to play mp3 file format without paying royalty to its creator , as same has been patented. the reason why Proprietary software play this format out-of-box is that Corporations like Microsoft pays the royalty, whereas Free Software can't pay because they don't earn anything from selling software.

But the good news is, this does not apply in India and many other parts of the world. its only applicable in countries like US,Japan,Canada etc. so you can free use MP3, without any legal hurdles.

More information:MP3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Read the "Licensing and patent issues" part, you can skip the rest:hap2:

I agree with both the sides with all the arguments laid out. But for me and IMHO I just can't (after installing) go on updating and installing stuff for a simple MP3 playback. It turns me off like anything. Hell even Win 98 could play MP3's out of the box. I'm not blaming anyone of anything and I know why linux cant get MP3 playback incorporated. But then why should I spend so much of time. And then there was this one time when the repo's were all broke and that broke my installation. After dling for like 1 hr I got a kernel panic how good is that. Anyway that's just me.

Agree, but things are changing.

now there is whole bunch of distros like Linux mint,Sabayon Linux etc which are capable of playing MP3 and all the other popular formats you would imagine right out of box.

Wonder how many people have called Samsung, Dell, LG, Viewsonic etc. to complain that their monitors had gone bad ?!!!

It's nothing but a ploy by M$ to make people switch to Vista. :P

Gates & Company doesn't like that XP is still beating the crap out of Vista - The Greatest and Latest
