In a head to head Sound and Vision pitted the best lcd (Samsung LN-T5281F ) and plasma tv (Pioneer Elite PRO-110FD Kuro ) they could find against each other

The winner, was the Pioneer Elite. Not only is it the best flat panel ever, thanks to improvements in both display techs, it's now actually the best TV ever.

In a comparison of blacks

Sound and Vision said:
But when we looked over at the Pioneer, we immediately knew we were seeing something special. The same features were so deep that it made the blacks on the LCD look gray—even though this Samsung had the best blacks we've ever seen from an LCD. On the plasma, the car appeared more etched and dimensional against the dark background, thanks to the extra low-level detail, and the letterbox bars virtually disappeared into the set's black frame.

The LCD also got points docked for having a smaller horizontal viewing angle, having an unusually glossy screen surface, and very slightly less good picture uniformity. However, this was the best LCD they've ever seen, and they claim that the technology still hasn't shown the best it can do—meaning there may still be hope yet for LCD fans. In the meantime, this plasma TV is the Best. TV. Ever

Pretty obvious result :P

Plasma life issues were sorted almost 2 years ago, but just because of the initial hoolah that they had an extremely short life, their marketability decreased drastically, and hence the huge LCD craze amongst the so-called geeks nowadays!

^^ Point noted. But still sellers still say that plasma has less life. In smart shopping tech2 show I was kind of suprised that the seller says that plasma still has shorter lifespan then lcd-in a tv show.

I took a look at a lot of LCDs and in general the plasmas seemed to have better colors...

Infact some LCD TVs have bad colors while viewing certain Tata Sky pictures and in particular Day-Night cricket matches wherein there seemed to be a halo on the pictures....harsh greens were another issue with the LCDs...

^^ Thats the lack of good image processing system on the LCD TVs to blame and also higher resolution. The Signal noise and artifacts look really ugly on LCD unless the LCD engine is good enough. Samsung has such a good panel but their picture processing system sucks really badly for SD feeds. Makes it look fugly.

The only thing that keeps people from getting plasma is the SD limitations ( simple lack of ability to display original HD content pixel to pixel ) and most importantly the cost factor. Specially those who are looking at sub 40'' solutions.

Plasmas probably have slightly lesser life still, but its more than adequate.

10 years is a good time and these will last more than that...

Besides there are some who seem to like the slightly washed out glossy pictures that some of the LCD TVs give.

Mind you they are reviewing the best plasma TV ever...Pioneer Elite Kuros are the best and amongst the costliest plasma TVs.

Are they even available here in India?

Well the pioneer elites use panasonic panels... the same ones that exist in panasonic TVs as well. I had a look at a few TVs lately and of those available in India, the Panasonic and Hitachi plasmas are the best in the business by quite a margin. Anyone who claims LCDs look better has gotta be smoking crack.

Which according to u guys is the best for watching TATA sky..lcd or plasma and which model in the 32" range...

I do not think Plasma's come in 32 me thinks 40 is the smallest .

Kuro rulez.. it's supposed to have "near CRT blacks", too bad they don't seem be be available in India.

Now if only they can reduce the power consumption by a bit in plasma.. last nail in the coffin of LCDs

Nope, plasma's come in 42" minimum, but an awesome 42" Plasma will cost your close to 65k while the most decent 32" LCD will clock in at 50k. Take your call on the 15k ;)

As for power consumption, true, but i don't see it as a valid reason to complain, since nobody minds adding extra AC's or gadgets to their home.

Ok but which "model" is the best one for normal TV(TATA sky) viewing??

None actually.. the source (both TS and Dish TV) are crappy, big screens enhance the crappiness.. maybe wait for Big TV.. there is a ray of hope it might have HD capable STBs and some HD content too..

PS: If you have to make a choice, Kuro definately handles SD content better than most plasmas/LCDs

Awesome Plasma 65k? where

Panasonic viera 42PV70H with 2 HDMI inputs costs 81k even now.

Hitachi is also similar.

You can get entry level LGs for that price(65k)...

Tatasky trans looks pretty bad at 46" and above...

You shouldnt look further than 42" for tatasky IMO unless you have a large hall...even then the colors seem to degrade with larger sizes....

IMO Plasma gives better pictures of Tatasky at that size-42"....

But clarity with Tatasky seems bit better in the 32" or 37" category...
