I have 2 x 1Tb drives (for data storage). Two of them are Seagate 7200.12 1TB drives @ 7200 rpm. I got this error when I started the pc -

I ran HDtune pro and got the following message -

How serious is the issue? Both the 1 tb hard-drives are reporting errors. Do I have 3-4 days time to buy myself a new drive and backup the remaining data?

Also do please suggest a reliable 2 Tb drive purely for data backup. I intend this to be an internal drive. How long will seagate take to rma my drives?

I would say don't waste time, and backup your data ASAP. this drive can last for months in this condition or fail right now. nothing can be said.

So Unless, you can afford to lose data. BACKUP ASAP!

Some sound advice here.... ^^

But I guess, u should still have a few days before ur drive dies on u..... Hope for the best but prepare for the worst....

2TB Internal Drive purely for Data..... :S Do u mean to say that u won't be using it as the Windows Installation Drive....??

Get the Seagate SATA 2TB Hard Drive ST32000542AS or the WD Caviar Green 2TB. Both cost ~ 5k each AFAIK.

BTW, I have heard that Seagate RMA is way better than WD RMA.... But I have little to no 1st hand experience.... :(

Data backup is on as I speak. I dont have enough space for 2 Tb in my remaining drives/laptop hdd/external drives, hence the above question.

Also HDtune is running in the background and it just returned this reading:-

how much time do i have now before the drive dies? how long will the seagate rma for the 2 drives take?

Is this particular model (ST31000528AS) prone to failure?

Virulbug too reported a similar pattern of failure (Abnormal count of "Reallocated Sectors" with the same model.

Dude.... relax.... take it easy.....

There is no calculation that can tell u the exact time left for ur Drive to crash.... It can go on like this for months or crash in seconds...

But as can be seen from the diagnostics, the condition is worsening. :(

BTW, why would Seagate RMA both the drives?? Only the drive that has failed will be RMAed. What RAID are u using??

The only advice I can give owing from my past experiences is don't turn off your PC. This is because the on-off power cycle puts the greatest amount of stress on your HDD, and it is possible your drive may not start up again after spinning down.

And Seagate RMA takes 7-15days on a avg.

Not entirely true. you can RMA when drive is performance is not optimal, runs too slow, has lot of bad sectors, failed long or short test etc. all seagate ask is a valid seatools error code

^^ No... By failed I meant the one that was causing the trouble (bad sectors/test failures etc.)....

If the other drive is working perfectly, they won't RMA it.... I think.... :S

^^^two drives have reported the same problem--I mentioned it the first post.

7--15 days is a lot of time--what all do I need to take with me to the service center along with the damaged drives and the bill?

Sorry.... I didn't find it..... :S

U need only the drives & the bill..... nothing else.

Carry photocopies of the bill. They will need photocopies of the bill for their record.

Too much trouble for RMA, registration, Valid error code, customer ID,ESD bags, copy of bill :S Here in Chandigarh no formalities, just bared drive in a polythene bag:P take receipt then new piece in flat 3-7 days.

Is it possible to request a step up from a 1tb drive to a 1.5tb/2tb drive by paying extra?

I am having a massive headache backing up the data - 2 x 1tb seagate drives failed along with another 250gb which was lying in a box for emergencies like these. will be taking 3 hdds to the service center today and pray they give them back within 3-5 days.

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

If I were to get a reliable 1tb drive now-which one shall i settle for? seagate/western digital/hitachi/samsung?

There seems to be no such thing as foolproof reliability. WD Green EARS 1 TB seemed to be more failure prone than Blues and Blacks. And i have seen three Seagate HDD's (same model no. as yours) fail within a year including yours. But i still went ahead with Seagate (bought one yesterday) just because of better RMA.

Personal choice really IMO.

I thought WD had better rma!

Hdds are supposed to be reliable in theory but in reality they seem to be the most unreliable.

Then it seems you havent gone through this thread.

Again, by unsatisfactory i mean long RMA periods. Judging by your above posts, waiting a long time for replacements is not something you are fond of... well nobody is :P

well with 2tb of data which includes 1.5tb of hdrips which took me a lot of time to acquire and 500gb of my office related work/research/critical personal data - i can't afford to be patient.

Well thats understandable man... i would vouch for Seagate but two of them have just failed on you which definitely makes you lean over to WD. You can wait for more inputs before making a purchase. Also do take a look at this drive. Lot of guys bought this in the past month here on TE, comparable to WD greens for data storage.

as i can see you r still able to access your hdds so better backup the data on some media or borrow a friends hdd for temp purpose.

Rest in hdtune if theres a yellow warning theres no need to panic. you can even ignore it for the time being but when it shows something in RED then you need not waste any time & do anything you can---run for the data.

same happened with my seagate last month and its still lying in my drawer--no time for rma.

data is dumped on WD BLUE...bought from a te member last yr. Touchwood as its the only living disk with me right now & rest are just for backup purposes.:hap5:

No m not saying seagate is bad coz my hdd failed after 1.7yrs of usage as opposed to many users whose disk failed withing 6months or an yr. But i hope seagate will improve in coming time if they dont wanna loose their valuable customers.

but strictly my next purchase will be a wd blue/black or hitachi. & yes samsung also. I have been using many sata disks from hitachi & samsung & tel you man they never ever gave me any yellow/red warnings or whatsoever pain.

still today no one can guaranty which brand will last & is the best coz technology is moving at a pace with cheap & fast devices. Gone are the good old pricy days when everything was made passionately and error-free & failures as frequent like today. Damn!! i miss those golden yrs of win98.:ohyeah:

funny thing is a seagate 20gb ide drive i had with my old celeron 300mhz machine which i bought in 1999 is still working properly. they dont make hdds like before. anyways i am going for a segate 1tbexternal now--will cost me about 3500rs. btw i have used hitachi desktop+laptop as well as samsung desktop+laptop drives before and all of them failed and i went through hell to get them replaced and sold them off here about a year back on te member's market. i wont be buying hitachi or samsung again.
