If you want to shoot and at the same time develop your photography skills, why not go for a second hand Digital SLR?
Models like Nikon D40 are available in the Gray Market for about 17-18K new, and with a standard kit lens. Second hand ones in Good condition would be about 13-14K.
Would give you a lot of reason to experiment and hone your photography skills.
You can always purchase lenses for the cam later on depending on the type of photography that attracts you the most. Moreover once you develop a system you can always upgrade the body to catch up with the latest technology on offer. With a compact digicam you would have to sell your body and chances are that you would get less than half the price for it.

My 2 cents.

Happy researching and hope you find a cam to your liking soon.

this is not available still....

i ordered TZ5 in tvm, panasonic brand shop before a month... they say, i may get it only this month end...

emailed to panasonic helpdesk.... they say this model is not available across india... fed up waiting for this model... :@

Have you tried sourcing the TZ15 (TZ5) locally or through retail websites?

If you intend on taking group snaps often, you'll be sorry for not choosing the TZ5(or any camera with a wide-angle lens) over the SX110/120 IS.

The Wide-angle lens has a clear advantage in such cases.

The only thing in favour of the SX110/120 IS is its image quality.

The good: Easy to use; best-in-class photo quality; manual and semimanual controls.

The bad: Fewer features, slower performance, and bulkier design than competitive models.

The bottom line: Canon's SX120 IS pocket megazoom falls behind the competition in every aspect except photo quality.

1. Brand shops not having stock doesn't mean the retail shops won't.

A few might still have stock.

2. The newer TZ7 replaces the TZ5, although pricier.

TZ7 is too costly for me...

pls advice whether sx120 is a gud VFM camera... or i shud go for sx110?? or shud i luk for any other model??

still searching for TZ15 as well... :)

is it really safe at jjmehta's??

i stay in a small town in TamilNadu... will it reach my address??

how can i beleive and pay them bfore i get my product??

You can buy from here, I think its the same shop on ebay -

eBay India: Panasonic Lumix TZ15 + 2GB SD - Bill & 3year Warranty (item 130340255908 end time 26-Nov-2009 19:51:55 IST)

Pay through Paisapay, but before paying contact him and ask by which courier he will send the package, then inquire if that courier service is in your hometownor not, or suggest him to send it via ** courier which is already present in your hometown. Once you received the package open it in front of courier person and verify the camera and bill, don't accept the package without checking. If something looks suspicious (like box is damaged heavily, or it looks like that the packaging was opened before) then don't accept, by that time you should have the contact no of that shop person. Talk to him before accepting the package or return it. Normally nothing would happen, Usually in small towns you have to go by yourself to the office to collect the package. Thats all :)

@Anish : I don't think the link is very useful, since those cams belong to a much lower category :P

@OP : I think you could trust JJmehta, if still paranoid then purchase from the ebay like foruamit2004 suggested.
