When it comes to printers, I am all at sea. So i need help from folks here while I buy one for me next week:

My Budget: Rs 3,500 (Max). Lower is better.

Needed for: Home

My Requirements (on the basis of importance)

1- Good black and white print. I will be printing around 20 pages daily.

2- Cartridge cost needs to be as less as possible. I would love to get a printer that can print 1200 pages before I need to change the cartridge

3- Decent scanning and copying

4- Decent after sales service

5- Colour printing. Ability to print a photo or two in good quality will be a plus point

^^ I know about compare India... but I would like to take something based on the suggestion from those who deal with printers or use them

Here is what I am planning for now: HP Deskjet F4200 All-in-One Printer series specifications - HP Home & Home Office products

If someone has any experience with this printer please share... any other comparable printers from canon or any other company. Any other suggestions. Also please tell the street price of F4288

Also, how many black and white printouts I can expect on an average printer before I need to change/refill the cartridge

No idea abt the Canon printers but the HP AIO seems to be good! I've an old HP AIO at home (probably from the very first entry-level models launched!) and it met all the requirements u've laid down in post #1 minus the 1200 pages printout (seems to be a bit optimistic there). :P

Customer service was good. There wasn't any need as such since it never broke down. Cartridge replacement was easy.

Scans were good. I guess mom has taken the backups of almost the entire photo collection we've! Good quality I should say. Very user friendly as well.

With a photo-quality paper, photo prints were good but drinks ink. Never bothered to take photo prints. :P

Hope it helps.

I too would suggest you to go for HP. I have many HP AIOs and none of them have ever given me a problem. Seeing some reviews and suggestions on some forums, I bought a Canon MP160 for one of my comps and there have always been small nagging issues with it. Maybe its just coincidence, but I'd recommend HP.

Like ??? :S

@morgoth

Go ahead with the F4288.

Decent performance & wide availability of cartridges !

But then Canon cartridges do hold more ink than ones from HP although re-filling cartridges would be more convenient with ones from HP...

AIO's are cheap because manufacturers compensate expenses through cartridge sales.

Cartridges are generally priced at a similar range and aren't exactly cheap.

B&W ~ Around .8-.9K

Colour ~ Around 1K

20*30=600 pages, you'l need a lot of refilling especially since the cartridges these days are the demo or starter ones with half capacity..

This is what im doing in dad's office,

1)Cheapest laserjet 5k hp 1020, inspite of heavy usage, needs refil once in 3 months, guy comes and refills and goes for rs.300, in eco mode plus the lowest resolution printing, the printing cost becomes very very less and prints are still very good. abt 2k or more prints..

2)scanning, my cell phones camera, a 2 - 3.2pxl cam and abby finereader are a good combo for occasional scanning plus they are portable and no size restrictions for the paper to be scanned.

3)colour photo--> any internet cafe or get a chepo inkjet..they come for lesser than 2k..

The model you're considering 4200, i was abt to take it sometime back for making it run on inverter, but dropped the idea, the reviews were good. One thing you can do is take the advice of someone nearby who refills carridges at cheap rates, ask him which one has best capacity and easily refillable cartridges..

You can get an entry level monochrome laser printer like the Samsung ML1640 for less than 4k with a free toner.

I don't have any experience with these but a friend who prints hundreds of pages everyday swears by the older ML1610 (USB1.0) and he said that the toners were easily refillable too. The ML1610 was available for Rs.3500 last time I checked.

How many B & W and Colour prints I can expect with demo or starter one... after that how many prints can I expect with proper cartridges?

I thought about laser too... but that's no go. I need a scanner and copier. Also realized that canon 2680 does not have Scanner/copier. Now I need to chose from Canon MP145, HP F4288 and Canon MP198 All should be within 3 to 4K

I am still in fix about Canon and HP... some say Canon cartridges are cheaper too

yes get the canon mp-145

i use canon mx-308 with fax also

no problems in refilling

u can rerfill urself only

dont worry brother canon is just fine

canon has big volume cartridge than hp

so doesnt matter even if its cosly!!

and my canon mx-308 came with full cartridge not demo

but i ll still advise u go for a cheap laser printer for around 4k

plus get a scaner for around 1.5- 2k

dat will be best for u

but if u insisit on inkjet only then canon is ur answer

well i dunno what to recommend now.

from what I understand about a laser printer it has 3 distinct printing components (besides the laser of course) which are involved in the printing operation.

the toner cartridge which uses toner particles (solid powder), an optical photosensitive conducting (OPC) drum and a fuser.

the paper is rolled between the drum and the toner. the laser etches a mirror of negatively charged particles of the raster image to be printed on the drum. the negative charge attracts the carbon particles of the toner on the paper and the fuser warms up and melts the toner particles onto the paper.

cheap laser printers like the samsung and hp have a single unit which acts as both the drum and the toner cartridge.

so if either the drum dies or the toner becomes empty, you'll have to buy both. Thus they turn out expensive if you need to replace the entire cartridge everytime you run out of ink.

But then, toners can be refilled and the quality of refilled toners is very good. But all toners can't be easily refilled. That's why it is important to look for a laser printer in which the toner is amenable to easy refilling. The old ML-1610 is good for this.

But then, there is always another weak link: the drum. Most new printers come with a flash rom chip on the drum which tell it to stop printing after a certain number of print cycles. So a drum replacement becomes necessary. But then again, there are modded chips available or you can short the toner chip manually or using third party chip resetters to flash these. to make use of the drum again. The newer 1640 has some problems with this chip.

The drum can easily last 5 refills.

Warm up times of the printer depend on the power of the fuser.

If you ever plan to buy a laser printer, keep these in mind.

Consult the greasemonks (or rather inkmonks) who refill cartridges at NP before you purchase a printer. imo, don't get an mfd if you have high volume requirements, get a cheap inkjet or cheap laser printer which is amenable to refilling and buy a separate scanner.

inkjet cartridges can be refilled easily too but they dry up so fast if you don't use them.

/ot btw, i still have to buy my scanner. I have decided on the Epson Perfection V30. So a trip to NP is due.

Thanks a lot guys... just one more thing left: anyone who had seen MP145, MP198 or F4288 in action, please share your experience.

I am seriously inclining towards Canon MP145 now because I think will be cheapest of the lot and will serve my purpose as best as an AIO can... Am I right?

I have a Canon MP180 myself(now replaced by MP198).

Was in a similar dilemma...HP or Canon !

Why I finally went in for the Canon :

1. Higher cartridge capacity

2. Richer & Sharper prints

3. 7in1 Memory card reader

4. PictBridge

5. LCD Display (Missing on my other two options: MP160 & hp F4185)

Not much of a difference in specifications between the MP145 & MP198...

So go ahead with the MP145 ! Either way you'll be spending the same amount on their cartridges...
