Prosumer cam or Entry level DSLR?

Oops, may be my facts were messed up or may be I never checked up on what I heard. Thanks Brendon and Ashvary. One question though, in that case, why doesn't the D40 focus with a 50mm af lens?

.
Simply because D40 doesnt have a AF motor in body (just like D60, D5000) and 50mm doesnt have the AF motor in it too.. (its not a AF-S lens)..

so no AF motor in body or lens..

The 50mm f1.8 has a screw driven motor and it relies on the AF mechanism in the body to turn the screw in order to focus. But since the D40 lacks the motor the screw does not get engaged and cannot turn to autofocus the lens.

Nikons AF-S lenses all have the AF mechanism built in the lens and thus can AF with any body.

Sony and Pentax also uses screw driven AF lenses and keep the AF mechanism in the body. Of course SSM and SWD lenses have an ultrasonic motor built in.

Olympus also follows the Canon methodology and has no AF motor in their bodies and the Olympus lenses all have an AF motor built in.

you get a AF 50mm f1.8, without the motor.

you also get a AF-S 50mm f1.4 with the motor (and very expensive too)

They have a AF-S 35mm f1.8 for 12k or so which will autofocus on the D40/D5000/etc.

Thanks guys, I think I'll have to do some more reading on it to understand it better :).

Jeri,

1000D at blore for 21k. Got it for a friend about a couple of hours back. That price is with B&W, and 18-55 non IS kit lens.

Well.. few updates.

could go personally to any shops.. this weeks been a b**ch. Leaving office by 8.. :(. so called up few.

But i been doing some googling. and here are my short listed ones.

Prosumer:

Nikon p90( I am gonna hear a lot if i buy this from a very good friend, i was so mad at him for not getting a DSLR, that too when buying from manchester. :S)

Sony DSC HX1

DSLR:

Canon 1000D. the ebay DOW one.

well in DSLR, in my easy budget only this. Cant get D3000, coz of no live view. I need that once in a white. its a glaring omission nikon.

And NONE deals in great. wth?. Does any one knows in tvm that keeps grey stuff.

Anything under 25k?

^^ At that budget, the Olympus E-PL1 is a good option, but you have already decided against the micro 4/3rds form factor. I guess you are stuck with the current options only. Decide wisely.

^^ Good suggestion. :D

@m-Jeri. For 24k you can get the body with kit lens. It has a perfectly usable live view and its not very big to boot. :)

@logisto..

no micro ones. I have a big hand. Those form factor is not good for me. I need a firm grip for steady shot.

@BF

the offer is with kit lens for 22k. why pay 24k mate?

ah.. u were talking abt olympus. check the above response. :)

^^ If you are not in for micro thirds and Nikon, dont think any other good deal other than Canon 1000D is there...

Not updated with Sony, but they had seriously screwed their entry level range...

wait for a bit.. the d3100 is due on the 18/19th of august and the d95 is due mid-september. this will affect your entry-level and prosumer camera decision.

Nikon D3100 (leaked):

* 14 MP CMOS Sensor (23.2 x 15.5 mm)

* Live View

* 3 inch Display

* 100 – 12800 ISO

* ISO setting manual or automatic

* 11 AF points

* full HD Video (1920 x 1080)

* price 650 €

* new EXPEED2 processor

* improved objects recognition for the AF control

* improved in-camera menu

* user can save picture profiles

Well if its true, looks like the D3100 gets the same sensor found in the Sony NEX cameras,should sell well if priced right.

actually, i read somewhere that this price includes 19% vat. also, we should compare euro pricing to dollar pricing. expect the dollar pricing to be a little lower. below $700 maybe.
