Driver Cleaner.. removed old drivers.. Installed the latest.. Then installed the OpenAL patch.. But still i dont get Surround sound. But its better than nothing.

Bump. Sorry to resurrect a year-old thread, but I'm having the same issues with Q4 and my X-Fi XM. Says my card does not support OpenAL. WTF?

Another issue - the latest (1 Oct) drivers for the X-Fi BSOD my machine, and I'm using the previous release.. 1 June IIRC. Any thing else I can do, short of reformatting and installing the latest drivers?

bah, the OpenAL requirement for better positional audio was and is one of the biggest downfalls of Quake 4. you shouldn't need to upgrade your hardware to get something as simple as that, especially when Quake 3 had some of the best positional audio in any game i've ever heard... even on an onboard card. it's probably an under the table agreement between raven/id and creative. the worst part is, even with OpenAL, it didn't sound as good as Quake 3 to me although i've used it only twice.

anyway enough of that, just wanted to say that if anyone cares about multiplayer with friends and are tired of having to put up with the shitty default non OpenAL sounds, they should download and use a mod like Q4Max or GTR. these mods have 'custom made sounds' made by someone called xgo. well they've come to be known as 'xgosounds' and they've been made a standard in the community... they're even enabled by default in those mods so you just have to load the mod and you're good to go.

i'm not sure what that guy did exactly to make things better but with xgosounds on, positional sound is 100 times better than that of default q4... even without OpenAL. it's still not as good as Q3's but the end result is definitely pretty decent. also, make sure you have the latest Q4 point release which is 1.3... i think they have some basic fixes for sound in there.
