Monitors Refurbished monitor from Amazon

I placed an order for a refurbished acer monitor from Amazon, the only issue is that it was considerably cheaper (~25%) compared to a new unit. So now I'm doubting the condition of the product, the listing mentioned 'excellent' but the heavy discount seems out of place.

I'm not quite sure about buying refurbished products from Amazon. Please share your experience if you've bought refurbished from Amazon.

Also this is the first time I'm buying a monitor, what precautions/checks should I take?
 
Got a refurbished Alexa device from Amazon, it was shipped in a different package but the condition was new. No signs of usage. Still works fine to this day after 3years.
Just make sure to video record the unboxing for additional proof assuming it is not an Open box delivery.

Check for dead pixels and backlight bleeding if it is an LCD panel, and to state the obvious see for physical damage in the body and cable.

If your expectation is only that it will turn on and show an image then you should be fine, but if you are expecting no defects (dead pixels, backlight bleed, uniformity, and other panel issues) then there is some chance you will be disappointed. You can't trust amazon's low paid employees to do all those checks on a returned product. Monitors get returned for that kind of reason usually. In my opinion, refurbished is only good for mainstream products, those that don't usually fail in the first place and that can be easily checked to be working by anyone.

Just an additional note here. Refurbished Alexa Devices, Kindles, Firesticks are "Amazon Certified Refurbished". These are safe to buy and come in a plain Amazon packaging. They carry full manufacturer warranty from Amazon as well. I myself bought a refurbished Kindle recently and it was basically a brand new unit in a plain brown box.

Most other refurbished items are sold by third party sellers. These only carry 6 month seller warranty and could be sold as refurbished due to being a customer return, damaged packaging, cosmetic issues or maybe even repaired. You may or may not be able to use the invoice to claim manufacturer warranty.

My friend bought a refurbished Zephyrus 16 for 1.6L. The only issue was a very tiny dent on the lid that can only be seen at an angle. We were able to register for the full manufacturer warranty using the invoice and recently got it extended too. Before purchasing, I made it clear to him that it was a gamble and he should expect some hassle if there are issues. We lucked out. This is not always the case.

Refurbished monitors might have dead pixels, backlight bleeding, ghosting etc which are legitimate issues but as the monitor is still "working", you may not be able to claim seller warranty successfully. Since manufacturer warranty is not guaranteed for these, you might have to swallow the loss and live with it.

You should had asked this before placing the order. Monitor is a delicate product esp. when refurbished ones aren't guaranteed to be shipped in the same original box and packaging. Just pray you get a mint item that lasts long.

As others said, it probably has dead pixel(s) (not covered by warranty if under a limit say 5-7) and/or backlight bleeding.
Consider yourself lucky if it doesn't.

No, because I have always avoided something as big, delicate, and costly like a monitor when it comes to refurb. The risk of something going wrong is higher compared to any potential cost savings. The QC will be zero or suspect
I have only bought cheap stuff like keyboard, mouse, headphone (had to exchange the first one as it was faulty) and a TWS (again had to exchange a faulty one) from Amazon refurbished.
I believe there is a dedicated thread here on Amazon refurbished/renewed where members have shared there experiences.
 
If you want to save cost for buying the monitors, then there are other methods, like using the Samsung Corporate Discount portal and / or using the GST benefit through some friends etc.

I am also searching for buying atleast 4 monitors of 4K UHD resolution currently and I was about to make the same mistake of buying them from Amazon Refurbished Segment because of good discounts, but thankfully my friend warned me against doing that, just as so many guys here in this thread have warned you.

Btw, are you also planning to buy a 4K monitor or some other resolution one?

I'm buying a 1440p, it is a sweet spot in terms of resolution and money for me. If you're buying under 30 inches, 4k is not too much of an improvement over 1440p.

I bought a refurbished acer xv272u kv monitor from amazon as it was out of stock new. Price was around 4k cheaper than new.
Problem is, The monitor I received had a lot of dead pixels so I had it replaced, the replacement monitor had a gap between the back panel and screen from top so tried for replacement again and got refunded instead. I doubt amazon actually checks or even tests the monitors it receives when people file for replacement so it'll be very rare to get a good refurbished monitor.
Anyway, new monitors drop a lot in sales sometimes like the xv272u v3(new version of kv) dropping to 16 k with card discounts which was even cheaper than the refurbished one I bought so it doesn't make much sense to buy refurbished, especially keeping warranty in mind as refurbished only gives you 6 months of warranty.

Has anyone tried to claim warranty directly with the brand based on the serial no. sticker rather going via amazons 6 months invoice?

I tried that when the monitor was still in return period, acer repair guy came and confirmed the issue but told me to just get it replaced/refunded from amazon as acer would give you a used monitor(some used in their offices or repaired) as replacement. Not worth the hassle as I had to send a few emails and take pics/videos of the serial number and issue a few times.

Not totally sure, but I think Acer didn't ask for invoice for providing on site warranty, just needed Serial no. + photos of dead pixels.


Coming to the topic of refurbished items, why are you buying a returned item when you can buy a brand new sealed item in the grey market without bill? There was a reason that item was returned. And it might get damaged in the three to/fro trips.

If you want to save money, do it smartly. Don't pay so much for a used/defective item with almost no warranty.

Which brand monitors are available in such grey markets?

And how much discount can we expect in the grey market for a monitor whose selling price is 50,000 on Amazon?

Grey market = without bill = 18% less than MRP + no warranty
Contact your local shops for more info

PS: I'm not encouraging buying from grey market; I'm saying it's stupid to buy some stuff refurbished from Az with no manufacturer warranty

Thanks for this clarification.

So basically there is around similar benefit of 18 % in this method, as we would get, if we use the GST Rebate method. But in this case, we will not get any bill and any warranty.

And yes, we do understand that you are not encouraging anyone to do buying from grey markets, but you are simply sharing the information.
 
On the topic of grey market and warranty, are there any brands that do not require bill for warranty claim? Someone mentioned that acer only required picture of the serial number.
