General :

Budget -

What is your budget? Mention Locality/Currency & Price Range.

INR ~ 20k, can extend a little if it is worth it, otherwise would prefer to stick to the current price.

New or Used? Online or in-store?

New. Offline > Online (depending on pricing and availability).

Brand -

Do you have any brand preference or dislikes? Please name them.

Don't want a Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, Motorola, etc. phone because poor build quality, does not last more than 2 years (to let members know what you're trying to avoid).
His previous phones were from Vivo/Motorola/OnePlus (currently using, screen developed black spot one morning) and ha has been pretty disappointed in these because all of them developed some issue within the 1st year - like speakers cracking, touch problems, green line on screen, etc. He had an HTC Desire 650 (IIRC) and that phone lasted so long before it fell from stairs :laughing:

Usage -

What is your intended use?

Casual - Calls and SMS/WhatsApp.

What is your expected battery backup?

The more, the better. Hardly any significant screen-on-time. Like 1 hour per day by my crude guess.

How long are you intending to use this phone?

Should run fine for 4-5+ years. (Most important point).
His HTC Desire 650 lasted close to 5 years and every mobile since that has developed some problem in the 1st - 2nd year.

Connectivity -

What is your preferred network?

4G/5G (nice-to-have)

What is the number of connections required?

Dual SIM.
eSIM - nice-to-have.

Platform :

Operating System (OS) -

Do you have any OS preference?

Android.

RAM & Storage -

How much RAM and Storage do you want?

Not significant.
(e.g.) Minimum 12GB RAM & 256GB Storage (or) Should be able to handle <number of apps> in the background & more than <your current storage>.

Do you want a memory card slot?

Not significant.
(e.g.) No (or) Yes, up to 1TB. A Hybrid slot is fine; Dedicated slot would be better.

Processing power -

If you have an idea of how much processing power you'd need mention here, else feel free to ignore.

Not significant. (Should be able to run WhatsApp)
(e.g.) Better than SD870 (or) Better than <current(or)any smartphone>.

Display :

What is your preferred display size, type, resolution and refresh rate?

Whatever lasts the longest.
(e.g.) Compact, AMOLED, FHD, 120Hz (or) Better than <current(or)any smartphone>.

Mention any specific requirements here.

-

Miscellaneous :

Any other requirements?

-

If you have already considered a phone, then please mention.

Whatever Samsung is fitting in his budget. Some A series if budget allows.

If any requirement takes a higher priority than other, mention here.

Build quality, Longevity.

Any reason to go for 8GB + 256GB model?
I think 6GB + 128GB would work equally well for him with ~ 5k saved.
More storage is a must for longevity especially in the current times, once the storage will get used upto 80% the phone will start lagging, thus it will be beneficial to spend 5k extra right now and save yourself from the hassle of having to clear out storage regularly.

While I agree with you in a general apply-to-all-people setting; the things like RAM, processing power, slowdowns, limited storage capacity, etc. had never been a bottleneck for him. He is currently using some old Nord 128GB with ~ 90GB free and the phone is ~2 years old at this point; has spontaneously developed a black patch on the screen which is spreading, that's why the longevity issue. IMO 64GB too would be perfectly fine for him.

I have a Moto G84. Using it for a year and would definitely recommend it. Well, 84 is not available anymore, so G85.

Coming from Pixel 4a, my experience has been fantastic. Almost no software bugs, battery life is great, and the build quality is solid. As an added bonus, the phone is lighter than most phones in the market.

You can also get the 256 GB model if you want for around 19k with some additional card discounts.

If you don't want to consider Moto, then Xiaomi and Samsung are pretty much the only remaining options. But I'd highly recommend this Moto
