Hey guys.
I have a Reliance wireline connection, single-user.
I wanted to know is there any way in which I can connect it to a wifi router and use it on my mobile and PC at the same time?
TIA :)

Just connect the broadband wire to the router and another cable from router to your pc.
Make sure the router is on dynamic dns.
Im using a netgear router and i can surf on my laptop,pc and mobile at the same time

Make sure you are making the wifi secure . Also from the latest TRAI guidelines you have to register your wifi device with TRAI .

if you have the connection which requires the web login, you are out of luck. You router cant log on and share this connection easily.

If you have this connection, you need to connect it to you PC, then connect the router(in Access point mode) to the second NIC (if you have motherboard that has two lan cards, otherwise buy a pci ) and then share the first connection under windows. This will share this connection with router and you will be able to access it with multiple devices.

If you have the DSL connection, then simply plugging the modem output to router in Access point mode will do.

Im using reliance broadband which has web login and it works like a charm on all my devices via router.
I selected dynamic ip and dynamic dns on the router settings page and router mac address as default.

Awesome :D Which netgear router? I'll get the same one just in case.

Pretty much any router from any brand would do. You need to configure the router to obtain an IP address via DHCP if you use the web login. If you have a dialer then you can configure it to connect via PPPOE. Its really quite simple.

Hey TIA-

I ran in to the same problem when I opted for reliance broadnet internet service. After a week or so, i was thinking it was impossible to switch my ethernet cables btw laptop's. So i used my old WIFI Router.

It's a Beetel ADSL 2+ 450 BX.

> From the splitter a line goes to telephone and I shoved the ADSL line in to your WIFI router.

> I hit the modem's IP and configured the router to obtain IP visa DHCP.

> Restarted the modem

> WIFI on on laptop

> I get the web log on page in laptop.

> I am using 3 laptop's and a wifi enabled phone as well. Works seamlessly.

Should you run in to any problems, please post here- i shall try to post the screenshots of my router settings, which might be of some help you.

Cheers,

Jai

Sorry couldn't update. Got busy with work again.

Im a noob when it comes to routers and everything. Which is the cheapest but branded (like belkin netgear etc) I should get for this purpose and from where?

I beg to differ. I've been using my Reliance wired connection ( with web login ) for the past 1.5 years without any issue by connecting the wire from the modem directly to the router. The web login can still be done and the connection gets shared automatically.

@OP: Saw the Belkin N router for Rs 1600 on ebay a few days back. That's a pretty good deal, considering they offer lifetime warranty. And yes, I've got my router exchanged once. They gave me a new piece, without any issues. So, I can vouch for it. :)

This one - eBay India: Belkin N150 Enhanced Wireless Router : save 50% OFF (item 160463951531 end time 11-Aug-2010 08:00:00 IST) Retails even cheaper now. :P

Good that this thread came up sooner or later. I was planning to opt for a Reliance Wired Connection with the landline telephone connection - combo postpaid plan with the night booster or whatever it is known as. The Youtele speeds have become a pain - hardly touches 55kBps on the 512kbps line during torrent or ftp downloads. :(

I have a Buffalo WHR 54HP router flashed with the tomato firmware and it has been doing good by far without hiccups. This was connected to the cable router through the ethernet cable. And there was no web login sorts. Configure the username and password in the router and it connects to the internet automatically. Would this work the same way if I had to take up the Reliance wired connection?

@mjumrani: Hey how are the speeds? What plan have you opted for? I think I will swap by the month-end. Did call up those Reliance buggers on the toll free number - 1800 3000 7777 and they had explained the plan and everything related to it but they haven't responded back in 2 weeks. :|

This Belkin router will work with reliance right?

I get around 124KBps on a 1 Mbps unlimited line( The night booster plan is available w/o a phone)

As for the connection, I'm in a rented flat so the owner already had a line installed, so I'm lucky on that part.

Though you should know that the call center guys can be pretty thick brained sometimes and very fast at other times.

No. Sadly enough, web login doesn't work by entering details in the router AFAIK. If someone manages that, please tell me. He gets a dairy milk chocolate from my side.

So if we do a web login once, the connection is set until it gets reset because of a power failure? How does it work?

Pardon my noobness please - I am still a tad too weak in networking. :ashamed:

No, web login doesn't work that way. There's an advantage to it too... silver lining to every friggin cloud I guess. :P

The power being cut doesn't have anything to do here. Either the connection being idle for too long results in it being disconnected or the automatic disconnection ( policy of Reliance ) every 24 hours. I've got the APC 1.5KVA connected to my router and my gaming rig. So when there's a power cut, the router is on for around 1.5 hours on the UPS ( provided the gaming rig's turned off ). The net works absolutely fine for that duration.

So let us assume my netbook is connected to the Reliance net thru weblogin which downloads stuff through torrents all day long. Do I have to do this weblogin every day, once in 24 hours to ensure the connection remains on? Now that's bad.

the web login is a pain some times ... i have to wait for 5 to 10 mins for the login to go through ... and you loose the connection even if you restart the computer... the connection is kinda of a WAN if you go to your network management you can see all the other people hooked up to your server.... so if you are careless then you can loose your data. The speed can get very low on full load ... evenings some times i get like 256 kbps and not the 1 Mbps.

I use a python script I found online which keeps on logging in every 10 mins or so.
Even after a long power cut or anything like that I don't use the login page.
Frankly I haven't seen the login page in weeks, and thats after atleast 2 long power cuts when I wasn't home, during which the router got turned off after my PC used all the battery.

Never happened ever since I started using the script.
The only time I have had to use a login page to start using my internet is after the network came back up after being down.

The speed problem shouldn't be there. I have never faced it. Have been using reliance since 27th May on a 1Mbps line.
