Reliance Jio Rollout

The sales guy at Reliance Digital (phoenix mall) was mentioning about free JIO SIM on purchasing the LYF TV or Phones.
Went to check out the TV on Sunday. Found VU 4K much better in color reproduction and picture quality. Tried viewing some stills from a USB drive on the LYF TV. Horrible pixel issue. The images were 18MP and 6MP Hi Res Jpegs shot by me on my DSLR.
I think JIO is going to flop out just like docomo after the initial 1 or 2 quarters. That too if they are able to keep up the HYPE.
JIO is turning out to be such a sore.... :(
Correct me where I am missing something.
Major benefit of 4G is speed. But with capped data plans one wont be able to enjoy the full speed always. Other operators also have capacity of upto 21mbps on 3G. I had tested this on Vodafone.
Just to compete with JIO they can also advertise the high speeds and kill the whole zeal of 4G.
Obviously with time 3G will phase out and almost everyone (operators) will move on to the 4G bandwagon. But this will happen when it will happen. Till then I dont see anyone letting JIO enjoy some exclusivity. Also to a city user(Thats where most of the 4G data users will be concentrated) how does it really matter if JIO goes for PAN India launch or incremental launch city by city. The latter worked fine for almost everyone till now.
Maybe Its only me but this delayed delays of JIO launch have killed the interest for me. I am not a bit excited about JIO now.
With other players in different cities like Railwire / Gazon/ ACT / Beam / Reliance(mumbai) already providing FTTH its just a matter of time that they will also provide other services like VOD / MIO, etc... Reliance already claims to have started gigabit fiber speeds in some societies in Mumbai.
R.I.P JIO.

Is anybody interested in trying out 4G? I have some referrals with me. Under this Referral scheme, a person will have to buy LYF smartphone using referral email from the nearest Reliance digital/ Reliance xpress mini outlets. With this phone he/she will also be entitled to a Reliance JIO 4G sim. The SIM will have 75GB data, 4500 minutes, 5000 sms free for 90 days.
Please note, the referrals are limited. I reserve the right to deny referrals. No flaming if you dont get one.
Also I do not earn anything out this arrangement. I am passing on the benefits to the community
The referrals are time bound. they expire after 10 days. So in case you are not serious, please do not opt.

I would like to have an invite and also seriously looking for a alternate to my Vodafone 4G. Please add me in if the invites are not exhausted.

From a tech point of view, the major benefit for 4G is that its cheaper than 3G for the telecos. Ref:
http://readwrite.com/2014/05/09/4g-3g-smartphone-data-price-difference/

The obvious problem is our telecos (like the US ones mentioned in the article) would want to milk their customers as much as they can. JIO can provide cheaper 4G if they want but then they are already being pushed by the current telecos to not talk about cheaper price points.

I agree too. 4G might have other benefits as a technology but do the telcos really want to pass on those to the customer base?
There could be some other minor benefits like better battery life than 3G or cost of implementation / upkeeping etc but come what may they will only want to milk the customers to the last drop.
I bet they will not stop 2G unless the companies providing the infrastructure stop supporting it or the 2G infra becomes expensive than 3G/4G to maintain.

Is there any option to buy the mifi device instead of LYF handset with bundled data offer?

Ravi, LYF 4K TV quality is not reflective of Reliance Jio 4G speeds or its implementation. There is no correlation. Also Broadband is a totally different game. None of the players you mentioned provide 4G mobile networks AND FTTH (Airtel might in metros, dont know). Also I would like to draw your attention to Jio coverage and Airtel 4G coverage in the west

Airtel doesn't even have a License in Gujarat. I agree that you might be getting good speeds and coverage in mumbai area for vodafone or airtel, but you got to see the larger picture here. Airtel, vodafone aircel have managed to commercially launch 4G before Jio but their coverage is no where near sufficient and only limited to metros where as Jio is trying to do something big, give 4G even to smaller towns. Creating such a large Mobile network from scratch with underlying support facilities is not a small thing![DOUBLEPOST=1462337428][/DOUBLEPOST]

The referral program specifically states that the offer is with a Lyf smartphone +. So... No

What good is that wide spread coverage if they are only generating hype about it for more than a year now.????
LYF TV quality does not indicate the quality of JIO agreed but it does kill the hype about it being some revolution or trend setter.
Plus even the cost was not proper. A 65" 4K tv from LYF costs 2L where as the better picture quality one from VU costs only 1.2L
Coming to the JIO side.
I honestly do not care about the large picture. coz 90% of my usage will be in Pune city. And even if I am traveling I would be more concerned about my battery rather than data speed :)
What is available today is more imp. It will be a diff game when JIO becomes GA. but till then I think Keep Calm and Enjoy 3G.

Well now the hype may become reality for you if decide to try it now won't it? And it is Available TODAY:p
Even in Pune city, Jio coverage beats Airtel coverage by a sufficient margin

Kind request to all who are receiving the referral they should acknowledge the receipt of the referral, which phone they buy and their overall experience with the purchase process, data and voice call quality to spread awareness in the forum. Also to make full use of JIO apps, and give feedback to network team through these apps

I know this was not directed at me but even if it is Available TODAY it is coming with a premium. I am sure if it had been a sim only trial you would have received a choke full of pms, not that you wouldn't have received a lot of them now. And the sim only one would have been the true test of network's ability to hold up and deliver even with the better coverage than Airtel.[DOUBLEPOST=1462471570][/DOUBLEPOST]
Rcom's 4G offer is pretty tempting. 10Gb data + Rcom unlimited for 93. :p

http://www.rcom.co.in/Rcom/personal/4G/4G_overview.html
But the coverage looks limited, at least from what I can see from the prepaid recharge part. Though it is as low as 75rs for 10GB in Gujarat.

Jio is trying to promote their own VoLTE handsets and early adopters get to use their services for free. Its a Win Win for both as after commercial launch a user will have to buy a VoLTE handset any how if he wants to switch to Jio. So why not do it now when you are getting the services for free.

Also a word of caution to all those who have got referrals from me. Please verify what services you are getting with the SIM because some websites are claiming that JIO app usage is free ie. Jio Magazines, Jio video on demand (movies), Jio Play (live TV), Jio beats (music) are free. No website is reporting if Whatsapp/FB etc is also working. I have no way of verifying if its working on employee referral SIM.

Um. I thought Jio would have an app or something to enable guys not on VoLTE to be able to use the feature? Btw, how true is the rumour that JIO sims on the referrals are locked to the LYF devices?

Available should mean SIM cards are available for purchase without any handsets. Just like any other operator.
I wont ever be using failtel but like I said with capped data plans what diff would it make if I use JIO (or any 4G) v/s 3G. Its only a short lived fun.... With our customer base mentality this kind of short fun will not find many takers. Thats exactly a very big reason why JIO is doing soft launches for so looooong.... And not directly launching it commercially and making it GA.
Anyways. I dont want to put an impression that I am against JIO. I am interested in 4G and that is the way sooner or later for everyone.
But all I want to say is the hype and show off has killed the experience and excitement for me.
When I got a demo of Airtel 4G the speeds were 40+mbps in my area. A friend bought a home wifi device from them and now he hardly gets more than 8-9mbps. Occasionally it spikes to 25mbps.
JIO or any other provider will also go the same way when it comes to speed.

There is a app called Jiojoin which enables users with non VoLTE phones make calls on JIO network. I have no concrete info but employee trial is not bound to LYF handsets. We have been using them with all kinds of VoLTE handsets and I think this will continue in future also

Just to clarify a few things
1. I dont know about post referral data call sms tariffs
2. I dont know if this sim will continue or you have to buy a new sim
3. I am not sure what happens if you use the first recharge within 90 days. However based on personal experience, employees were able to recharge and get more free data, minutes and sms. We are still getting recharges free of cost inspite of 90 days trial period over. So I think this should be applicable to rest also
4. No number portability
5. SIMS wont be bound to LYF handsets. You can buy the handset and sim and use sim with your favourite 4G phone
6. I am calling helpline why referrals are not getting released to users. till then please be patient

@onlyravi i also have airtel 4g home CPE wifi device (wanowrie area) and am pretty satisfied with them - the demo given would have been on the speedtest.net local pune server (tata/gazon) which shows 30-40 mbps usually. your friend (and me too) get widely different speeds depending on destination server bandwidth also (not just airtel bandwidth) - for example i also get anywhere from 5 - 40 mbps downloads on various websites but efficient things like torrents i usually get 30+ mbps all the time. of course, not defending airtel here, their service also goes kaput once in a while for me.

things like microsoft updates usually get full speeds, linux updates speeds are usually good but occasionally on lower side... current major downside is the price and download limit (Rs. 2.2k per month for 30 GB).

@onlyravi - btw, which area of pune are you located?

edit: i should add that my device shows signal strength of around 3/5 bars (in web UI) or 60-65% (on the physical device lights it shows 3/3 full signal)

@onlyravi - just curious - what broadband do you have at present and at what speeds/FUP/price?
hahaha I am the poorest kid on the block when it comes to good broadband service.
But I am few of the rarest people in Pune who get good service from Reliance Broadband (Wireline)
I am paying 699/- (Rs800 with taxes) for a 2mbps UL(NO FUP) and 1meg up. Its a ADSL connection. And working great for last 2.5 years . Touchwood.
I normally get 3.5mbps. Down.
Only problem is I cannot upgrade the speed. Tried to upgrade to 4mbps plan thinking if 2mbps gives 3.5mbps speed it will be great to have 4mbps(and get maybe 6mbps) but for some reason it cannot be done.
Apart from that and the fact that it auto logs out every 24 hours I am very happy with the connection. There are full threads on TE where people are crying about the pathetic speeds of Reliance Wireline in Pune but I am an exception (touch wood again ). Just like even Airtel works well in certain areas.
