iPad 2 successor possibly to hit stores as early as February

While this can be lumped squarely in the "unconfirmed" column, rumors have begun swirling about the possibility of Apple's next-generation tablet, the iPad 3, launching within the next "three to four months."

Anonymous sources in the supply chain are cited by DigiTimes saying that the parts and components for the iPad 3 are being delivered to OEM contractors while reducing deliveries for the iPad 2.

"OEM production of iPad 2 will remain high at 14-15 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011 but decline to 4-5 million units in the first quarter of 2012, paving the way for the launch of the new iPads," DigiTimes writes.

The rumors are bolstered by further reports from a Chinese Commercial Times report that says Foxconn will begin production on the new models in January, and increasing production by February.

The aforementioned anonymous supply-chain sources say that anywhere from 9.5 to 9.8 million units of the iPad 3 will be produced in Q1 of 2012.

Another report from last week, this one from the L.A. Times, cited February as the target launch date, so the new timeframe isn't too far off.

According to the Times, the iPad 3 will be similar to its predecessor, but will include Apple's retina display, doubling the resolution found on the current model.

The original iPad launched in April 2010. The iPad 2 launched in March 2011. If Apple's 11-month trend for next generation of its popular tablet continues, February 2012 would be the target.

With increased competition in the tablet market from the likes of Microsoft and additional Android offerings, Apple might be feeling a sense of urgency to stay ahead of the curve if it wants to hold on to its tablet market share.

If you don't have an IPad, well, you don't have an IPad.

I am not an apple fanboy by any means and intact prefer high end android phones over IPhone but if given a choice for a tablet, I would pick an IPad over other tablets any day. I maybe a little biased towards IPad because I own one but I have used the samsung galaxy tab extensively too and have found the IPad to be a much better product overall. For me the end user experience is the king and that is where IPad outshines it's competitors.

Having said that, I do hope that IPad 3 is a great improvement over IPad 2 and not just the same thing with a few upgrades. My gripe with IPad 2 was it's inability to play various video formats out of the box, I hope IPad 3 rectifies that.

Sent from an ipad. :D

^ Absolutely agree. I am no Apple fan, in fact, dislike most of their products, but in the tablet space today there is only one good product, and that is the iPad.

Well - Apple products always generate interest. As somewhere it is said - Apple underpromises and overdelivers, this is their highlight. I do hope iPad 3 will be significant improvement over iPad 2 & not just few throwaways like they did with iPhone 4S. With Steve not there - I am not too hopeful though (Not that I know the inner workings of Apple, but just a personal feeling - Apple was Steve and Steve was Apple)

Apple does not over deliver, they just dont deliver some really wanted features at all. They deliver what they like, not what you want.

As for the underpromises

Just make sure it has full sized USB and HDMI, I will buy it!

Damn Apple needs to restrict everything. Even the kind of files I can access.

The absence of USB has to be for a good reason. Any takers? On another note, I've heard Bose systems don't include USB inputs to avoid virus problems...
Kind of tend to agree with "Apple was Steve and Steve was Apple" ... how many times have you read an article that talks about Apple, and does not include Steve Jobs in it? What it tells us is that the perception has always been that Apple was Steve Jobs... only time will tell if the company can progress (or even maintain it's stranglehold) in the same manner as when under Jobs.

^^ but still they run faster than the other cars;maybe they are from the jetsons.

As for someone who said apple doesnt allow to play all formats, the video player on the ipad supports mp4 but the if you puy o player in it from the app sore you can play every format available with wifi syncing straight from your mac/pc.sweet isnt it?

This is bollocks.they have the lead in the tablet segment with regards to both o.s and the hardware.others have been blatantly trying to copy what they do but still havent manage to catch up.others have taken 2 years just to get competing devices up and running ala the transformer.
People talking about usb's.why do you need one when you can transfer a file wirelessly from your pc or access it anytime you want from the cloud?

^^ but still they run faster than the other cars;maybe they are from the jetsons.

Just bcs they run faster doesnt mean its better. I would like to watch a movie from my HDD. Access a file thats on my pendrive. Damn, I have to up it to iCloud and then download it again? BS!

^ bcs its simply a helluva lot more faster and easier. Unless Apple is ready to open up, they will lose market share. But it is true, they do produce the most optimized tablets. But again, iPad has very limited uses aka just entertainment. Anything more, look for something a little bit more open. I will agree when u say iPad is the best for a casual user. For a power user, its just limited and plain annoying!
