Review: Sony MDR XD100

Well, my sennies are now officially my dad's :(, so i decided to treat myself to another pair of cans and spent the entire afternoon today blowing my ears (and brains) out.

My first impulses were to get myself one of those zalman theater headsets but apparently mediatech dont distribute them in hyd..and i was too lazy to have em shipped here.

Next, i went in search of the iball surround headset and found em. After 10 mins, i was literally unconcious from their terrible sound reproduction and very very irritating vibration effects.

Anyways, after another two hours of various altec lansings, logitechs, labtecs, philips n sony, i zeroed onto 3 products.

1) Sony mdr-xd100
2) Sony mdr-xd300
3) philips hsp805

after listening to these 3, I was simply blown away by the xd300 and almost asked the guy to pack it up for me before, by a wierd flash of thought, i turned the carton to see the price tag and whooops..it was 500 bux over my intended max budget :( i.e it was for 3k :(

Now, the two budget cans remained, each costing exactly the same i.e 1050/- INR.

A couple of ppl advised to go for the philips but somehow i liked the sony better.

now..that the blah blah is over, here are the features...finally:
Max. Power Handling 1500 mW
Plug Material Gold
Compatibility Studio
Driver Unit Size 40 mm
Impedance 70 ohm @ 1khz
Weight 6 oz. = 175gms
Volume Control None
Frequency Response 12 - 22000 Hz
Design Over the Head
Sensitivity 100dB
Cable Length 11.48 ft. = 3.5mtrs
Sensitivity 100 dB
Sound Mode Stereo

May i point specially towards the weight and the cable length? :P
well, the cable is xtra long and the headset is xtra light is all i can say.

i plugged the headset and after fiddling with the eq and the eax console, everything was pure bliss.
The main adjustment i had to make was that i had to crank up the lower freqs all the way up to gain substantial bass.
The noise cancelling of the headset is top-notch and noise leakage is minimal.

So far i have listened to loads of music and im totally in love with it. Ofcourse these are nothing compared to the sennys but at this price, these r simply awesome.

the only drawbacks that i can think of are:
1) two sided cable..would have preferred singlesided for lesser tangle. (the xd300 were single sided)
2) Wierd whooshing noise when donned (even when not plugged in.)

Well, thats all i can think of right now and i would recommend these cans to anyone within a budget.

Ofcourse, it all depends on ur choice cos the philips are a very close competetor to these sony cans.
And if u can afford 3k, dont look beyond the xd300..now those are frikkin AWESOME. :hap2:

great review!

So bloody impatient :P But still, anything that does the job is good enough. Congrats. And thx for trying other headsets and guiding others in their purchase.

Smith, how were the MDX 300 ??

Are they noise cancelling too??

And freaky, anyone coming form abroad or something??Cos I need a pair of good cans too :).

am also looking for a pair of good cans, now that i saw ur review confused between philips hsp805 and MDX 100. Will buy whathever its available here.

Why in the world did you give away your Sennies ?? :S :S If it was me, I would have fought tooth and nail with my dad :P

And if your budget was 2.5K, and the X300 costed 500 bucks more, you should have gone for it anyway...... IMHO...

Anyway abt the review, nicely done :D .....

so, is it compatible with the tsonic? :)

I am planning on buying a tsonic. I got an isound vibrance 850 here. Was wondering whether it could be used with the tsonic

grr..2.5k was my upper limit and u guys r really tempting me now :@

anyways..i have a tsonic with me now and the headfones sound really great..the bass is awesome. They r ultralight n very comfortable.

hmm...just thought of this: kumar if ur in hyd n planning to buy this headset pls. do get in touch with me..i will give u a demo and will also make an offer if u like them ;)..and then treat myself to the xd300:tongue:

i have this and i love it....very comfy...however the bass reproduction could have been better . treble is good.
