With one-third of our parliamentarians facing criminal charges, why are we forced to pick among corrupt politicians when we go to vote? This could be about to change --

with a new proposal in Parliament that would allow citizens to bar corrupt candidates from taking office.

If political parties continue to put forward bad candidates, we would have the right to reject all of them by

selecting the “None of the Above†option when we vote! [font=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]
Most politicians will fight this tooth and nail -- but the proposal is gaining momentum and the Election Commission has indicated its willingness to support it. Now a surge of public pressure from all across India can push the Commission to move from rhetoric to action.

Somelike this is already in place ,it was there in recent TN state election. Before voting the candiadate should declare his rejection/unwillingness to vote to the polling officer and a form will be given and it's filled by the candidate. (know this, since my Dad was involved in election duty). But not sure about the 'none of the above' button in the ballot machine.

In Goa elections during this month, this was option was available, but not on the EVM itself. Less than 100 people used that one. But this time most of the candidates with shady past lost. Some of them still made it to Assembly, but as a start the results were good.

Actually, this option has been available in our constitution since 1960.

I even exercised it in my local MC polls just a couple of months ago.

All you have to do is write down that you refuse to vote where you generally sign in the attendance sheet. After you have done that, the booth incharge also signs the record right under your signature confirming that you have exercised your right to refuse to vote.

I would never have come to know about this option, if not for the flyers distributed by Team Anna campaigners in my city.

Not only the right ot rehect but I think there should a right to recall as well. The current system is set in a way that once someone comes to power, the general public has no recourse but to wait till the elected official/politician's term ends to remove him/her from the position. This means that the person is secure for the duration of his term till election time. If we have a right to recall, the elected person would have some kind of a deterrent to not be too corrupted and to take his duties and responsibilities seriously.

On a different note, Team Anna movement has lost its steam in recent months.

With the current system, a neutral (refusal to) vote is same as not voting at all. It doesn't make any difference. Right to reject will serve a purpose only if the rejected candidates are disqualified.

Personally, I would love a system where one has the right to two votes. One will be a positive vote and the second a negative vote. A person at his will can also exercise only one of them.
