Had purchased it as a secondary drive. Only used it to sync my 1 TB OneDrive, so that is where the writes comes from over the past 5 months (0.2% of rated life thus far). At the end of the day, don't need the additional storage over my existing 2 TB drive.

Purchased from Amazon, so will include the invoice for the 5-year warranty that extends till Sep 2027. Will be selling it to the first person who agrees to the stated price, bargainers would probably have to wait.

For the inevitable comparison with a new WD Blue SN570, the 980 has the following advantages worth the premium:
  • Includes hardware-based AES-256 encryption which the SN570 does not support (probably the biggest differentiator)
  • Includes hybrid cache of around 170 GB compared to 12-13 GB dedicated cache for SN570 (longer sustained writes)
  • The Elpis controller in the 980 is about 50% more efficient than the WD one under load (lower power consumption)
  • Despite similar specs, the 980 usually has slightly higher read/write speeds in real life (slightly better performance)

Have done a secure erase using Samsung Magician and have kept it packed so that there are no more writes.

Also, I had mentioned the comparison to the SN570 upfront to avoid getting into that conversation. If the differences in NAND quality, controller, hardware encryption, software support don't matter to you at all, then please go ahead with the SN570. Comparisons in terms of price are better directed to Samsung than to me.

If you feel this is a good deal for what it offers in comparison to the price it usually sells for, then kindly connect with me to close the deal.

Forgot to mention that the SN570 also doesn't support over-provisioning.

Practically though, the tiny cache means the SN570 is pointless for any kind of productivity/sustained write use cases and the lack of hardware encryption means relying on additional CPU processing for software encryption and exposing it to in-memory attacks. Hence, I hope any future messages will not draw comparison to the SN570 again and instead appreciate some of the benefits of the 980, for what is a tiny premium over any discounted SN570 price.
