For ftp / https links you can try aria2 which is a command line download utility. But managing the downloads is not so straightforward with it. Also I didnt like the webui so much.
For torrents there is nothing to worry with transmission. It works really great!
About the scheduling as it doesn't have a hardware clock, you will need to use ntp to set and maintain the time which requires an internet connection. So if the the internet is down for sometime the time may not be correct which may affect the scheduling.

Torrents are only good for the New stuff. I am a member of a lot of l33t sites(FSC,SCC,CHD etc) except HDbits.org. For movies that are older you dont get good speeds due to geographic constraints since most of these files have 1 or 2 seeders.stalker said:

Apart from this it would be nearly impossible for me to seed back since i download a 720p (4.4gb) movie everyday nowadays as i have to rebuild my collection when my HDD died(WD Green). Check out Moulin Rouge 720p anywhere and see if you can get a good speed on it
For Flac yeah What.CD is better but then i only have a 100gb buffer there

Varkey, if you are planning to mod this to run Linux, I'd be interested in knowing your experience.
I think with the initial batches, the SSH root password was known, and it was possible to use SSH to mod it for Linux. I think the newer firmware has changed the root password, and now you have to use the serial console to mod it, by opening up the hardware.
On the other hand, if you are lucky, it might have the old firmware. Just don't connect this to the internet yet, and check if you can SSH into it with the old password (stxadmin)

I am thinking whether I should install openwrt or debian. To install debian you need minimum 500 MB space, but the internal NAND has only 256 MB so installation is possible only on a USB Flash Drive. Openwrt on the other hand is very small and runs transmission etc. I don't real like like keeping another flash drive attached to it all the time. How is openwrt? I have not used it before.
So what do you guys think?

I wouldnt say it will be a cakewalk. With such stuff theres always some risk of bricking it. + You never know when something doesnt go exactly as per the tutorial. At such times having someone who knows what hes doing around or even a basic knowledge of shell commands can help you out.Arjun said:
