Yeah wget is a good option for FTP downloads. Though its command so dont expect resume and all from it. Apart from that Wget cant be used with the One click hosters like RS since we need to supply a username and password or can it?
@Varkey - Bro were you able to get this working :P . Which Linuz did u install then?.

Wget can resume downloads. Also supports basic http/ftp authentication

Sorry guys, my exams are going on so couldn't work on it till now. Mostly I will be installing debian on a USB Drive in a day or two.

Install Debian Linux on your Dockstar

There is also an option to install a mini version of debian on the internal NAND itself, available space is aout 219 MB and the mini Debian Install takes 182 MB. So there won't be much space to play around with other apps. Hence going for the normal debian install which by default takes 250 MB + :)

Once you have installed debian, wget or any similar apps can be installed! :)

Basic Http authentication in the sense you are talking about Windows integrated authentication right? That is utilized in FTP too but its a different case for Rapidshare etc. I am not sure we can use Wget/Prozilla for that or can we?

^ The ssh password is 'stxadmin' itself! :) I just logged in and disabled the pogoplug start up softwares to prevent it from phoning home.

I am thinking whether I should install openwrt or debian. To install debian you need minimum 500 MB space, but the internal NAND has only 256 MB so installation is possible only on a USB Flash Drive. Openwrt on the other hand is very small and runs transmission etc. I don't real like like keeping another flash drive attached to it all the time. How is openwrt? I have not used it before.

So what do you guys think?

Yippieee!!! The old password still works. I guess once it connects to the net, it pulls in a new firmware with a different, unknown, root password. I've seen many in forums complaining the root password wasnt working. So either Seagate is shipping with new firmware on some models, or these babies self-upgrade (degrade if you ask me) to new firmware with changed password.

Now, for installation, i think you have lots of options. I've seen people installing Gentoo, Archlinux, Debian, and OpenWRT. With Gentoo & Archlinux, ARM is not really widely used/supported platform. Their installs feel a lot like 1-2 person hobbyist efforts.

You are better off with Debian or OpenWRT. OpenWRT should be optimized for the ARM platform, with a small footprint, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to get binaries for applications. Debian has a larger footprint, but I think "apt-get" makes getting pre-built binaries very easy.

I guess you've already made your choice. Either way, both have their advantages and disadvantages, and both of them are fine choices.

^ I think once the plug goes online, it changes the ssh password. But you can login to your Pogoplug account to change it, so even if it goes online it should be OK. :)

Yes I too prefer Debian, will do it in a day or two and post the results. Damn Exams!! :@

^ Finally started the installation of Debian to a pendrive. Its downloading the files now. Will update the post once done. Should be over in 1-2 hours! :)

go varkey!!!!!!!!!!!! Do it. My dockstar should arrive soon as well, giving my poor desktop PSU some much-needed rest ;)

:( The Pendrive I used is not working properly, not getting detected / getting detected very slowly so always it boots in to the Pogoplug OS. Have to try with a different pendrive again :(

Oh frack... hope you find another one soon :)

Got another pendrive and this time it worked fine! :) The installation is very easy thanks to Jeff - Install Debian Linux on your Dockstar

After that, followed these instructions to prevent it from booting into the Pogoplug install. Without this fix, the dockstar alternates between Debian and Pogoplug everytime it boots.

So now I have a working debian install on my dockstar, now will proceed with transmission and other stuff! :)

Installed transmission also, everything working fine, webui is great. Haven't tried an actual torrent download but will update the status soon.

Also installed Webmin to manage the dockstar easily, provides a good web interface, its really helpful.

great going Varkey

i wonder if you came across PlugApps

it has a custom built linux image for the dockstar... and apps compiled for the arm arch too... have a look... me running jaunty on the plug... we could share notes...
