CPU/Mobo should i buy intel core i7 980 extreme proccy

Completely your prerogative, if you can deck the investment with SSD's, killer graphics ( Quad GTX 580's anyone ) as well as OC it like crazy and just basically enjoy every bit of fun the processor offers then go for it otherwise why waste money :)

yea ... post more of ur needs ... if u just want to game and dont wanna upgrade for another 2-3 years .. no use going for this one .. u might as well go for a 950/new 2600 and live with it .. instead of wasting on this .... if you do heavy 3d rendering and what not and have money to spend on something that will greatly reduce ur rendering time then go for it ... but if it really has no profit in terms of work ... and u just need some very powerful processor .. live with a 950/new 2600 which will last 2 years easily and allow u to play games on full provided u change ur gpu each year .. or might now even have to do that if a 580 lasts u that if games which rape ur machine dont come out :P

If you wanna buy it then buy it.
We will never ever be able to justify the kinda H/W that we buy.
For the starters, how many times have we pushed our i7 quads to 100% cpu usage or our GPUs to 100% usage???
I dont think even 25% of our total PC usage.....
So just go ahead and get it.
Believe me you will feel happy.

i am planning to get the intel core i7 980x proccy,,,,please share your opinions....:)
No simply because INTEL will very soon replace it with Core i7 990x 3.46GHz at same price, so wait a month or two.

^^^ ok i will keep in mind...how much is the difference other than the clock speeds???
It will b launched at the same price... :) and it will b just 133mhz faster than the current 980x ;)... expect 2 to 5 percent improvement...

No point getting an i7 980x now really. Wait for sandy bridge quad's if ur happy with a quad. Or will for a little while. In Q2 Bulldozer is launching and Q3 the new six and eight core sandy bridge cpu's launch

^when Q3 will come u will tell him to wait for Q1 of 2012 naa ? ... that will never stop ... I mean if something is as close by as maximum 2 weeks~1month as in the case of Sandy bridge waiting is fine ... but telling to wait for more than that will go on and on and on

I see no harm in waiting a few months to get the latest architecture. That way i know i'll be ok for 2-3 years. I never like buying stuff which becomes obsolete in the matter of a few months, especially if im spending a bomb on it. Given that the current Nehalem architecture is now more than two years old, personally i would wait till the new ones come out. But the OP is free to do as he wants :)

980x isn't Nehalem it's a 32nm Westmere

sandy bridge is a 32nm processor too

also the P67 Sandy Bridge are old dual channel tech based & the highest one is equal to a 3.4GHz 45nm i7

don't worry we'll buy the X68 32nm Sandy Bridge or X68 22nm Ivy Bridge Octa Core too ;)

no tech passionate guy thinks about being ok for 2-3 years as we get bored in 1yr :P

Man.. have you even come close to pushing your current config(in ur siggy) anywhere near it's limits? There is no need to upgrade. You are just wasting your money...use it wisely.

Till then stick to ur system, seriously a Core i7 920 @ 4GHz and COre i7 980x would deliver the same fps if not more for the 4GHz CPU.. Advantage, more cores, lesser power consumption etc etc yeah yeah but wait till March as UDIT said.
