This question has been bothering me lately. I read on several places online where they suggested to use a VPN. I was wondering if its really necessary to do so or should I access the internet like I always did?

You really only need a VPN if you are accessing blocked sites which the government has been doing a lot lately.
Otherwise common sense, browser ad blocker and a capable Antivirus suite is enough to cover you on the internet.
Another use case might be acessing say Netflix/Amazon Prime as a US user.

Our company has specified that company provided vpn (Cisco anyconnect) to be used ONLY when accessing company intranet.
For accessing "normal" ressources/websites no. But if you have to access servers / shared disks and use softwares from your company, then yes. But they should provide you one in that case
