Hey Guys, i am planning to buy a hard disk, probably 640gb Seagate sata... right now i have pata drive in my pc so obv i will be needing a sata to pata converter... so pls suggest be a good converter as well which works fine...

i am buying the Seagate sata coz 6 months down the line i ll be buying a new pc so i can use the 640then....

My pc config...
CPU : AMD 3000+
MB : Asus K8N Ai series
RAM : 1 GB (Might increase that as well)
GC : Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT

So basically 2 questions,
1. Buying the seagate sata is the right thing or should i buy the pata....
2. If i buy the sata then which converter to buy so that it runs smoothly....

Well my friend bought one for 150-200 rs locally from some wierd company Enter i think (I've been seeing a lot of their products in the market lately). It seems to be fine.

Maybe you want to opt for a more expensive one ??

This should be perfect for you :)

+ you should be able to sell it off when you get a new system ;)

PS: You need a PCI-X slot tho :ashamed: Doubt you would have it, if no SATA :( I initially thought PCI. Sorry bout that.

How bout a normal HDD casing through USB?

I doubt i have the pci slot, anyways the usb thing is nice but it would be a bit slow & i am gonna use the HD to do my editing stuff on sony vegas software so it would be even more slower as it would access it through the usb... thats the reason i am lookin for the converter.. any other converter... or should i just buy the pata drive instead.... and what would be the cost difference for the pata compared to the sata.....

I checked again & i do have the pci slot but not the pci express so will it work on my system??

Expansion Slots

AGP Slots 1 x AGP 4X / 8X

PCI Express x16 None

PCI Slots 5

no it wont work on ur system... get the SATA PATA converter suggested by madmaniac n let it run :)

Thks sato1986 for the info, can someone suggest me a good SATA 2 PATA converter then.....

Hmm, if I am not mistaken, all K8N series had SATA connectors..

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

If yours is the one above, it has SATA ports. Get the WDC 640 AAKS, series disk, Lamington road was flooded with those at 3.6K (and this time around I wanted the AACS drives, and they were out of stock everywhere..)

Why are you guys suggesting a convertor, when his mobo has SATA slots? Aditya or are the slots not working !!

SATA has been around now long enough...

Those might be the new ones i guess, i bought this pc back in 2004 so i guess back then it came with the PATA connectors & not the SATA ones...

Mine is PATA def & thats the big problem......

Hmm, I am not convinced. All mobos come with PATA (IDE) as well as SATA connectors. Post a pic of your motherboard. I had a K8V series board which came around before K8n was introduced, and it had SATA connectors too. I remember this clearly as just 1-2 months after I bought the K8v board, the market K8n was easily available..

If thats the case then nothing like it, i ll post the pic asap.......

Aces is right. There was no older/newer version of the K8N, just one. It was based on the nForce3 chipset and had SATA connectors.

Having trouble spotting it? This should help :

Edit: From your image:

Its in an awkward location, no wonder you missed it ;)

OMFG.....

U guys are legend lol... THks a lot Aces & crasy eddy for the great info... I just got saved... this is great news...

yup now get that sata hdd soon:)

Heh, as I suspected. SATA has been around a while, and all current disks are backward compatible, so it should work without issues.

Although you seriously need to dust your computer :) and looking at your PSU, you will require a molex to SATA connector, do buy that as they dont come bundle with most HDD's...
