I am thinking about getting myself a PS3. Its mostly just to play some of those good games which are released only for the PS3 and not for PC. I cannot afford the 35k price tag on the official Indian PAL edition of the console, So I am thinking about the Japanese PS3's that sell for cheaper in the Grey market. I have some queries about the same.

1. Is it a wise to go for a Japanese version of the console without any warranty.

2. I understand that the PS3 games are region free, but what if I want to play the occasional PS2 game? I guess the PS2 games available locally wont work on the NTSC/J PS3. But are the NTSC version of PS3 games available in India?

3. What about DVD playback? I guess they are region locked and locally bought DVD's wont work?

4. Is 25k a good enough price for the 80 GB Japanese PS3 if purchased locally?

1. You can PM params since he's got the NTSC/J version, but as far as I have seen..you got nothing to worry on reliability since it does not suffer from problems like the x360.

2.You can try the grey market to see if they have the NTSC versions of PS2 games or you have to order it online.

3.Dunno abt dvd playback since I only tried Blu-ray movies.

4.If you can wait a little longer, you'll be able to purchase a PS3 officially with warranty since Sony has released the 40gb PS3 at a low price in Europe and it could be coming to India. If you are in a hurry,25k does sound like a good price since ppl are getting the 60gb for 22k.

For further info,PM params. He'll answer your every question like a customer support center :P

1. I bought an ntsc/j from gray around 4 months ago. Right now, in the majority of time, it has stayed on cranking Folding@Home (grid computing project for diseases, like WCG, and it totally utilizes everything the ps3 has got). I last switched my PS3 off more than a month ago, hasn't overheated, hasn't crashed, etc like my PC would've if it stayed on that long. And I won't be switching my ps3 off until it crashes or overheats.

Believe me when I say this, the PS3 is fine quality machine, the most reliable console ever built (in terms of functions).

Go get your ntsc/j ps3. If by a rare chance the ps3 does crap up, just take it to Sony world and they'll fix it for a price, but as far as I can tell, this won't happen. Officially, the ps3 malfunction rate is 0.03%.

2. Officially only PAL games are available in India. Via gray market you can find some ntsc ps2 games, or online would be your best bet (play-asia or ebay usa) There won't be any price difference between buying it from gray and ordering it online, only thing is you have a larger library online :P

3. About DVD playback, PS3 is region locked to them. Its the way the dvd's were built and all machines having a dvd player have to comply with the region codings. Even bluray movies have region coding and ps3 is locked to that too.

Only the bluray games are free from any region locks, but fortunately, unlike the DVD, bluray movies have are only restricted to 3 codes :

Blu-ray Disc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But, here's the good news, the PS3 will play all your pirated/burned dvd movies :P

4. Extremely good price. I bought my 60gb for 27k! And monkey bought it officially for 40k :P In any case, I would recommend you get the 60gb ps3 for cheaper price if you can find it, then later, upgrade the hard drive to 200-300gb or something (yes the hard drives are upgradeable, all your 2.5" sata HD's found in your laptops will work)

I want to get a PS3 too but the high game prices are putting me off.

Sony is doing nothing in India to pull the prices down. Look at XBOX 360 titles. Halo 3 is selling at around Rs. 1800 in India whereas PS3 titles are > Rs. 2500.

I hope the console games sell at the same prices as that of PC titles.

they cant do it in INDIA cos of higher cost involved in selling the consoles....also SONY didnt advt in INDIA like M$.....hence the base is low.....people recognise x360 more than PS3.....I am personally wtg for PS3 to get under 20k...so that i cud rush & buy it !!!

Thanks for the clarifications param. I was planning to buy it off eBay.in (Indian site). The 60 GB version is also avaialble from the same seller, but the price difference is only 1000 bucks. so I did not see any use in getting the 60 GB version.

btw, I have one or two more qureies

1. Whats the best way to connect a PS3 to my Dell 2007WFP? Should I get a HDMI-DVI cable?

2. Do the PS3 accessories avaialble locally like the controllers or remotes work with the Japanese edtion or is there some difference the hardware too that make them unusable?

I am not talking about the console bro, i am talking about the cost of the games.

@Lord Nemesis, sorry for using ur thread:tongue:

1) Yep.Best way to do it.

2) WIll work.

As an aside, do NOT pick up the 40GB versions, the backward compatibility, HW and SW both, with PS2 games has been removed. Something to consider if you're planning on playing PS2 games on it.

Id rather suggest you go to a local shop and pick it up after a through inspection. Its available here in hyderabad for a price tag of 26k, am sure will come down if u negotiate a bit

You can buy and use your own hard drive I think. I have had my ps3 for a while and play games and watch movie and use it as to play music I have serving off of a dlna server on my pc .... wireless

Windows Media Player and Nero both have built in DLNA servers so you can stream movies and music over wireless.. Since I have 17gb of music ... this is an awesome feature.

Hd quality BlueRay movies are fantastic (and a BlueRay Player will cost you almost as much as a PS3)

GamePlay is great... yes a little pricey... but IMO worth it :)

And although no Nvidia driver for PPC Linux yet... I do have a Linux Distro booting from my PS3 too.....

My PS3 ... worth every penny :D

IMO instead of spending 28-29k on the 80 gb one the best thing u can do is ..get yourself a 20/40 GB PS3 for around 20k or even a 60GB one for around 24k .through the deals avaiable on ebay\play-asia\ or buy one locally..

and then buy a 160GB\200GB 2.5 " SATA HDD that fits in the PS3.

for eg this one ( Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (Perpendicular Recording) ST9160821A 160GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive OEM)

i think you will get something similar for 4.5-6 k (max) in India..

believe me 80 gb is too low if your are gonna store lots of movies\music and HD videos on your PS3and use it as your total entertainment system(which i think you will),and this is what even PiXeLpUsHeR has to say in the above post.

also i think this will be a better solution then the 80 GB as the PS3 supports any 5400\7200 rpm SATA HDD..in its drive bay and there are many guides on the net which will help you in attaching the HDD(after reading some of them i think its not that difficult),posting the links here would put me in so trouble so its better u google it..

so the total cost would be 20-25k for PS3 and 5k for HDD..overall you will have a killer PS3 for a lesser price ..:)

hope you found my suggestion good..

2.5" Sata hard drives will work.

True, my 60gb finished in a month and I was hardly downloading anything. Most ps3 games will store cache data on the hard drives for faster loading, and all videos/trailers off the PSN have to be in high def version (1080p or 480i are the choices) if you want them to look great on your LCD HDTV, and plus if you want to run linux off your Ps3, you'll have to partition the hard drive leaving even less space.

So yeah, getting a separate 150+gb hard drive would be reccomendable.

Seems like someone got the 80GB PS3 on ebay before I could. So now thinking if I could get it from Mumbai. From where can I get the 60 GB PS3 for the best price in Mumbai?
