Sony-Ericsson intros XPERIA X1 'iPhone killer'

sony-ericssonxperiax1-lg3.jpg

Sony-Ericsson opened the Mobile World Congress today by unveiling the XPERIA X1, its first true touchscreen-focused cellphone. Following a deal with Microsoft, the handset is Sony-Ericsson's first device to use Windows Mobile for its OS but also uses a custom interface of "XPERIA panels" rather than the default Microsoft front-end: users simply tap panels with their fingers to access calling, media, and other functions, according to the phone designer. Though dominated by its 3-inch, 800x480 touchscreen, the device also includes both optical and physical navigation pads at the bottom as well as a unique arc-slider QWERTY keyboard that tilts outward for more comfortable typing. The X1 is also the most Internet-connected Sony-Ericsson device in history, the company boasts: unlike even most advanced 3G phones, it offers HSUPA (High Speed Upload Packet Access) that sends video and other media almost as quickly as it comes downstream. Wi-Fi is onboard for short-range networking and is backed by assisted GPS for route finding. A 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and a microSD slot (versus Sony-Ericsson's favorite Memory Stick Micro format) round out its key features.

The first XPERIA phone is expected sometime in the second half of 2008; with quad-band GSM and an unprecedented five-band HSPA/UMTS connection, the device should be available both in North America as well as Europe and includes the key 1,700MHz band needed for T-Mobile USA's upcoming 3G service.

wow, looks awesome. Big Touch Screen+Qwery keypad :ohyeah:. The first windows Mobile which has excited me :P

Hope it'll be priced decently :P

Now only if they would give out the hardware specs, smartphones have evolved enought now to warrant hardware specs. Is is based on ARM design or is it Intel's Silverthorne platform etc...

ARM. Right now WinMo only runs on the ARM AFAIK. Silverthorne as of now does not really provide any competition. You need more than just "We can run x86 applications on it" to compete. The fact is that the libraries are sufficiently different for that point to be irrelevant in the short term (though over a couple of years that will change, mostly in MS's favour since their tool chain is largely x86).

I'll buy this phone when it comes out IF it is better than Job's baby. Don't think I'll buy Job's phone ever though, lack of a dedicated qwerty hurts.

wooohaa!! :O Thats one amazing phone. Lets hope it will be equally good in real life as it appears on paper now :) Will make a device worthy of spending money on then :D Great work mate, and thanks for all that info.

now funny bit is u are saying its a 3.2 mp camera and on the back it says 3.0mp. rumours or true, time will tell what this thing is really come with. looks nice. but price is an important factor as always. under 20k its a huge seller....

good work Quad ..

Thanks man , will keep updating if i get more info.

Did u check out the video of this phone.

Gives us more info on the interface.

Looks better than Nokia N95 [Soapbox] and N82 [Compass Box] [My terms to address to nokia phone] ;)

Gotta admit.... long time after T610 and K750i, this is the SE phone that has really excited me. WinMo looses me a bit there, but then SE's recent implementation of UIQ (likes of M600 and P1i) has disappointed me in terms of speed. So far, my experience with WinMo phones hasn't been that great and UIQ felt nice till P890i. So, I'll reserve my full judgment till I see it action first. :)

But nice phone nevertheless, HTC does make some nice designs.

The fact that silverthorne was running a fully operational Vista should be proof enough, nothing would beat a desktop based OS on a smartphone. Not to mention, AMD's (ATI) leverage in the mobile gpu's not only would leverage the cost advantage in quantities if X86 platform was adopted, ARM holdings gets a royalty for every piece of hardware manufactured using its design, a-la CDMA. INTC, AMD are the behemoths it would benefit the consumer in the end due to the cost leverage these companies can offer.

Wow....This one I want.

Will probably be 2009 by the time it stabilizes here though...

Prob will start of around 35k.

Hardware - HTC

Software - Sony ( running on MS Mobile )

Price -- expect it to be above 40-45k when it launches.

This phone is sure gonna pwn all those HTC Touch Dual and Imate stuff :D
