Sony Xperia S/P/U/Sola/GO Thread

^^ But this raises questions on Sony's claim of 18 months of support for its devices. Leaving out two of its important devices out of the update list. That too of the NXT series. And I just don't want to start off on how Xperia Go & J having lower specs are getting updated. Sony is going the same way as it did with X10. Hopefully they'll backtrack their decision (like they did with X10) after getting a piece of public agony.
@randomuser111
Any light you'd want to shed on the issue ?

"In case you are wondering how is that the low-end Xperia J is getting the Jelly Bean update, while the dual-core U and sola aren't - despite Sony didn't make any statement, we guess the GPU is the one to blame.

All three phones have 512MB of RAM, but the Adreno 200 GPU on the Xperia J uses far less RAM than the Mali-400 inside the Xperia U and sola. We also know that Project Butter needs more GPU power than what the ICS UI. And the insufficient RAM due to GPU usage is probably the reason why these phones won't be getting to taste Jelly Bean."

I'm really pissed, will never buy a Sony phone from now on. Spending 16k and not getting couple of major updates its really a led down.

Add to that the ics update is so rickety that it had lagged the phone like hell, battery performance had taken a toll with. 154 update, won't even stand 4-5 hours after net usage!

The only two option I see is to opt for custom Rom or dispose of this device which is highly unlikely since on a student as of now :p

^^ I have already read that gsmarena article. (Notice the use of the word ' probably' in the text). And the Xperia Go has the same gpu and same amount of Ram as that of U, Sola.

What I am referring to is your previous claim that Xperia U would be upgraded to jelly bean.

Also what about Sony's 18 month support policy?

JB custom roms for U should come out soon. Let's see how much performance is degraded then.

Don't mean to be the Devil's Advocate or anything, but the Go has a far lower screen resolution than that of the U or Sola and hence less RAM is used by the GPU to push the pixels. I still believe that Sony could have found a way to provide JB to the U and Sola by releasing it with a vanilla Android skin which uses less RAM resources.

I have no idea about this but does Google provides any minimum or recommended hardware requirements for running different versions of android?

It doesn't, but it has generally been observed that Jelly Bean requires more RAM for Project Butter and its triple buffering to work effectively. However this is not an excuse since the Nexus S also has 512MB RAM, an inferior processor than the U/Sola and yet received an official 4.2 update. Nexus phones are the way to go for those who care about at least 3-4 update cycles.

Actually the phone can run pure JB but not bloatware added JB(according to Sony)

Hi, if I'm not wrong you were he one saying that if Sola doesn't get JB you will give out the Sony flagship phones to us for free some time back. You even stated that the ROM is working and that some final testing is still left. If Sony feels that the usability will suffer why not Open Source the code for the ROM they made, so that developers would get a fair idea about how to go about it and CM10 could become a reality on our devices.

It's kind of sad to see how Sony has just chosen to ignore these 2 phones. Will not be buying and recommending Sony any more.

Ditto, will never recommend or buy Sony phones ! Can't sell my phone since don't have bucks and I am still a student :P :(Limted earnings)

Will eventually shift to something from the likes of HTC One X or Nexus in a year or two :P

^^ Actually the reason I picked the. U was due to Sony's previous track record of updating its phones. Even the lower end walkman & mini got ICS one year afterwards.

This is how big companies operate. Since the U & Sola were already selling in huge numbers so no need to invest further in it. The go needed an extra push due to its poor screen resolution. Similarly, the J which has an outdated hardware, while being sold at the same price point as that of the U & Sola, needs to be made lucrative to the unsuspecting customers by offering JB update.

I thought that after the Mini fiasco, Sony wouldn't repeat the mistake. But as soon as the customers showed their support, they forgot their "18 months of support" resolution.

lol @ people going sad for sony ignoring 2 phones, simply coz you bought the phone which is 1 of the 2 :p
Using an Xperia S, love everything about it except the 3 buttons, its a hit or miss

Oh really? You added such great value to this discussion.

Hardware wise, they may lack the stuff required to handle the load.
Galaxy Ace is also a best seller in low end price range, isn't updated in any way officially

No, they do not lack the firepower needed to run JB smoothly. My 2 year old ZTE Blade runs 4.2.1 as smoothly as it would run 2.3.7. Sony is citing the excuse of the Mali 400 being a RAM monster, but they can easily find a way around and release a pure AOSP based JB for the phones in question instead of loading it with UXP NXT bloatware. Also, @comp@ddict was talking about the U/Sola being the bestsellers across Sony's range of phones (which includes your beloved S) not just a low-mid end bestseller like the Ace.

The Galaxy Ace is based on ARM V6, if I am not wrong this was one of the primary reasons along with it having only 288MB of RAM. The Xperia U and Sola aren't slouches, they have dual cores and 512MB RAM enough to run JB. Anyway, the point is when your beloved XS does not receive JB 4.2 then you shall to bear the burns of buying a Sony phone.

After this entire fiasco, I am not sure if buying an Android phones from 3rd party manufacturers is a good choice, they are milking customers taking in large sums of money and not giving the promised support. On the other hand Nokia is supporting all Windows phones from Lumia 510 to 900 to get to Windows 7.8 and is releasing timely updates for the latest Lumia 920, too. This goes to show why Nokia was the leading brand and hopefully will be the leading brand once again.

Would it be possible to start a signature campaign against Sony's decision?

I think we can start one, even though I am a go user and secure that I will get the Jelly Bean update.

For some reason I am not getting any firmware updates while my friend with the Sola gets two a day. =|

What are the chances of the SAMSUNG Galaxy S Advance getting a bump to Jelly Bean? It has the same SoC powering it as the early SONY XPERIA 2012 lineup.

And if you look at the XDA forum, Galaxy Ace has Android 4.2.1 ports. Working ports.

Galaxy S Advance is getting Jelly Bean in January. Samsung already announced that earlier.
