^^I've had the Audiophile USB for a while and did not like it. It had very loose indistinct bass. Not my cup of tea.
What do you think about going for the external USB X-Fi itself,
i just want clean output from the sound card, without too much distortion, am not a fan of the EQ's or enhancements most of these cards offer.
would the USB card be able to just deliver clean output so that i can use them with the Headphones \ speakers.

I need a clean solution as i was getting some kind of noise (pops and crackles) and distortion with the onboard soundmax.

not looking for anything too fancy, but would like some clean and undistorted sound.
