The Wait is Over! "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" Trailer

Wanted to share the recently released trailer of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, the highly anticipated prequel to Starz' hit series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," premiering January 21

Before Spartacus struck down his first opponent in the arena, there were many gladiators who passed through the gates onto the sand. "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," tells the story of the original Champion of the House of Batiatus: Gannicus (Dustin Clare) in a more ruthless time before Spartacus' arrival where honor was just finding it's way into the arena. The new series adds to the cast Jaime Murray as Capua's sexy social climber Gaia and Marisa Ramirez as Melitta, a beautiful slave who must face the ultimate decision of the heart. Jeffrey Thomas plays Batiatus's father Titus, the traditional and cautious Lanista, head of the Ludus. They join returning cast members John Hannah (Quintus Batiatus), Lucy Lawless (Lucretia), Peter Mensah (Oenomaus, before he becomes Doctore, the gladiator trainer) and Manu Bennett (Crixus). As the prequel begins, Quintus Batiatus is the acting Lanista while his father Titus is on an extended visit to Sicilia. But Batiatus isn't satisfied with just the thought of taking over the Ludus one day; he aspires to political power and prestige in Capua, and perhaps beyond. In the class-conscious world of ancient Rome, the House of Batiatus must first earn the respect of both politicians and socialites before being granted the right for its gladiators to fight in the much-revered championship bouts called the Primus. Batiatus must not only survive the harsh politics of Capua, but also compel his hedonistic fighter, Gannicus, to embrace being a champion gladiator who will bring esteem and respect to the House of Batiatus.

In my opinion, the show doesn't seem to bring any thing new in the prequel.. But one the other hand how much can a 1:30min trailer reveal..!!

Regards,

Holy mother of Jupiter! This seems to be a prequel. No Andy Whitfield. But the kills looked dead brutal and nudity is pretty much a given

January 21st 2011, mark this date on your calendar.

Prequel?? They havent even finished with the main story yet.....
Batiatus was alive and kicking in the trailer and so was Lucretia. If memory serves, the ending of the first season showed
the demise of Batiatus at the hands of Spartacus and Lucretia being stabbed by Crixus.

This is the quote of the storyline from IMDB:

Before Spartacus struck down his first opponent in the arena, there were many gladiators who passed though the gates onto the sand.'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena' tells the story of the original Champion of the House of Batiatus: Gannicus in a more ruthless time before Spartacus' arrival where honor was just finding it's way into the arena.

This is a prequel, so no Andy Whitfield will be ok. But the continuation of the main storyline without him will be very weak :(

By the way, does Spartacus actually have any role in this prequel? Else it would be stupid calling it Spartacus:Gods of the Arena. I guess the series will end with the beginning of the main series.

Spartacus wasn't his real name. It was just an arena name which was given to him. So it won't really matter if he plays the part or not.

Andy Whitfield will not return in the S2 of Blood and Sand since he was diagnosed with cancer again after the treatment. So that is perfectly fine. Let's see how the prequel shapes up. Loved the blood and gore. And the nudity of course.

Lucy Lawless - :asian: :drool2:

MAN! Have 2 months passed so fast or what?

Anyhoo, the show is back and is back in style. Blood, gore, boobs, cuss words, girl-on-girl action, heart thumping soundtrack, YES, we have it all in here. The intro episode is vicious & brutal in every way possible. We now explore the not so glorious days of Batiatus and shows how he has to build his way up to the top. This prequel will probably show the rise of Crixus and how he eventually became the champion of Capua. Manu Bennett seems to have shed his weight in this season, which is understandable, given that Crixus was supposed to be the new recruit. We have a new gladiator on the scene now in the house of Batiatus; Gannicus. This guy is overtly cocky in his fights and otherwise as well. Can't match Andy's brutal nature, but still delivers on his kills.

We have Jamie Murray as Gaia, who is (sort of) a compensation we get for Viva Bianca in this season. And she doesn't fail to deliver either. If you think her role as Lila in Dexter was hot, then you haven't seen anything yet. I'll admit Bianca was much hotter though. :P

I hope this progresses in a proper manner like the first season did. :D

This part of Roman history is looked down as savagery and the decline of their Empire. Well seeing the reaction of the people to this series - can we really blame the romans for enjoying all the Live action. - After all live IPL is at least 100x more fun then watching it on any TV.

Wow what a super porn-fest the first episode was! Blood, gore, flesh and seks.

Although this may be the prequel, we all know who made it to the first season and thus, the outcomes are known as to who survives in the arena and who wouldn't. No suspense that way. Anyhow, Batiatus & Crixus is back! :D

Tonight. 2nd Episode.
Can't wait can't wait can't wait. I can see an epic, epic feud or partnership developing between Gannicus and Crixus. Its going to be too badass.

Not tonight, at least for us. Tomorrow morning at 10:30 here in India.

And btw Gannicus survives as he is mentioned as one of the leaders in the Civil War along with Spartacus, so he will have a part in Season 2. I think Oenomaus' wife runs away with him or something like that.

In other news, it appears Andy Whitfield may not make it back to the Spartacus series due to the health issues. :(

Liam McIntyre Chosen to Play Title Role in New 'Spartacus' - Yahoo! Finance

McIntyre takes over the role of the Thracian warrior sold into slavery in the Roman Republic city of Capua – where he rises to become the champion of the city – before leading the slave revolt that ended Season 1. The part was played in the first season of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" by Andy Whitfield, who was forced to leave the show in order due to health issues. Whitfield gave his blessing to the recasting.

"Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead 'Spartacus' forward," Albrecht notes. "It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he's dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going."

Liam McIntyre made his mark in his native Australia on such series as "Neighbours," and "Rush." He also appeared in the HBO mini-series "The Pacific." He recently completed his first feature starring role in the independent film Frozen Moments. McIntyre is currently in New Zealand, getting himself into gladiator shape in order to take on that iconic role. Production on the series is slated to resume by Spring of 2011.
