My budget is around 4K.

Main usage of my speakers will be music. I prefer listening to mostly trance, electronic, hip hop and a bit of pop and rock.

My main aim for speakers is clarity and thump.

I am not looking for any other features, looks, etc. I want to get best sound possible in this budget. Doesn't matter if speakers look ugly , bulky, etc. Focus is purely on sound quality.

I will be purchasing these speakers this weekend from nehru place.

Since these will be my first descent purchase of speakers so all suggestions are welcome.

C3 costs 8K Edifier

I won't be able to go beyond 4K

I am a bit of a noob when it comes to speakers. So any suggestions what to look for in specs?

Altec lansing VS4121 (2.9k) + Creative Sound blaster audigy value (1.4k)

I have a similar music taste and VS4121 + Creative Live! was an amazing setup I had. Now I've moved on the X-fi (cause of windows 7), but I still miss the Live!'s midrange.

In short, any sound card will do wonders with the VS4121. Highly recommended.

^^ I am also using windows 7. Are there any driver issues with it?

Do you guys think that an external sound card or amp is required? I am using vostro 1510 and it has realtek sound card which isn't that good

With such low end speakers, you don't necessarily need an external sound card.
VS4121 + Cheap sound card (Creative Live!) blows the MX5021 (without sound card) out of the water. But like you stated, and we are talking about external options. The sound cards do get pricey (Fiio E7 (4k), Nuforce uDac (4k+). Hence cant really comment on that. Surely depends upon the budget and priorities.

^^

So you recommend getting a cheaper speakers + sound card? How much will a descent sound card cost?

I don't have a desktop so will have to get a external soundcard

Slightly off-topic. Now that MX5021 is no longer available, which is a good alternative for that if you have a good sound card? Logitech Z2300 doesn't quite cut it, does it?

Save up a little more, buy the uDAC and Edifier C3 or something like that.DAC is must when your source is a vostro.

^^ I am fed up of waiting.:(

I also have a ipod shuffle and a nokia 5233 so I will connect to them sometimes.

Looks I might have to stick with Altec VS4121. Should be some descent improvement over my current intex 2.1

Thanks a lot guys for your replies I have finally purchased Edifier C2 Edifier

Today I went to nehru place to purchase Altec lansing VS 4121 but it was selling for 3.4k. Edifier C2 had better reviews but it was 4.5k so din't gave much thought to it earlier. But after asking a few shops I got to know that it is selling for just 3.5K. I then again read some comparisons between VS 4121 and C2 and most of them stated that C2 has a better base vs boomy base of altec so finally I went in with C2.

Damages 3450/-

First impression: I heard VS 4121 in croma few days back and C2 definitely sounds a lot better than it. Though it needs a proper burn in time it still sounds pretty good.

Highs are not harsh at all.

Base is a bit low.

It gives overall balanced sound rather than just boom of boom like some cheap speakers of creative.

I will post pics asap

Looks are really good. An external amp, aux ,remote and illuminated lights for speaker of this budget is pretty unbelievable.

Speakers sound far better with my shuffle than my laptop. Looks like I would have to get a sound card as well/

Man how are you even getting Edifier C2 :( Been looking for C3 and C2 sinace ages but not able to get my hands on them in Bangalore
