Hi,

I will be going on a trip to Europe this Nov...so I need to have a good camera to capture the memories there.

Please suggest a good DSLR. My budget is 35K max alongwith the lens kit.

Please note this will be my first DSLR camera...have used bridge cameras before.

I've shortlisted the Canon D550, any other suggestions / deals where I can get the DSLR?

Buy a Panasonic travel zoom like lumix tz30. you will get more shots than a dslr and it will be easy to carry than a dslr .

Get the 550D or if u want nikon then Nikon d5100 or the nikon d3200 but I would suggest you put some more money into it and get a 18-105vr lens instead of the 18-55

If u are serious photographer planning to practise photography in future then only buy dslr
If you need a good cam for your europe trip or for travel ang general family purpose better get the mirrorless camera.. they are as good as dslr in quality and very portable.. since u wont be buying various lenses, lens range is not the issue.
Belive me, it would be treat to shoot with these light cameras than dslr in travel

Sony, olympus, fuji and panasonic already have a stable range of mirrorless.. nikon canon jumped too..
Other members might suggest you better on which mirrorless is better.. i am less aware of current models and trends

Sony has its new full-frame sized mirror-less cameras. Not sure about launch in India. Look around, if not India, buy it in Europe.

like mentioned by others, check your priorities and buy as per requirements.

long zoom cams would sure come in handy or else try getting dSLR body with lens as per need.
since you have mentioned about prior hands on experience with bridge cams,it wouldnt be bad to try dSLR.
but experimenting with dSLR at a vacation might spoil the good 'memories' tag.

at your budget, the canon 550d/600d or Nikon D5100 is possible or else Nikon D3100 with upgraded lens.

Welcome mate ..... you are starting off on a DSLR journey. It's exciting and very, very expensive .... Just some random thoughts

1. You will never be fully satisfied with the Kit-Lens (18-55mm) .... It's a great handicap outdoors - especially on the tele-range... and
soon you may wish to add a 55-300mm ...... This is always a great lens to have
or later a 35 or 50mm prime. These two additional lenses will cover most of everything & altogether will cost you around 30K (not including the Camera)
2. Later a good Tripod - proper camera + lenses carrying bag.

3. If it has to be a Nikon - do not opt for the D3100 .... coz the D3200 is much better.
4. The D5100 is available for around 30K (Made in Malaysia) at VT/Churchgate and for 32K (Made in Japan ... I am told by a friend) at jjmehta .... the MRP is a lot more. As you are from Mumbai - check out the best rates (Alfa is good too).

5. About mirrorless cams - I really do not know much except that they are a whole lot more expensive (at the moment)

Get a DSLR if you want to make big prints to be famed and kept on wall or if you want to sell images , if you are going to share your vacation pics on net and making some 5x6 prints go for a good travel zoom .

For SLR starters kit lens will be enough atleast till one understands the different controls and how to use it. I suggest the SLT from Sony. Sony Alpha SLT A37 with kit lens(18-55) is available at indiatimes shopping after discount INR 31410. A year ago I bought SLT A35 for 35k :( .

Canon 550D is good but both have their advantage and disadvantages. Go through the comparison link below before purchasing. Sony A-mount 55-200 is available for INR 11k AFAIK which is also good.

One more thing - Read a lot of reviews before buying anything or goto a store nearby and try it yourself. :)

Do not buy a DSLR and take it on your trip this month. Ideally, buy it 4-6 months before you take it on holiday.
They have depth of field and really show shots to be out of focus when they are. You do not want this learning experience while on your holiday.
