Google maps does offer offline functionality, but for that I will have to select a small area and save it,and I understand it gets auto deleted in 30 days. I am looking for something like Sygic. It seems however, that the free Sygic India app no longer exists. I am just getting a NOT FOUND error page in the play store for its link (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sygic.aura_mmi). Any other decent alternatives?

Does not showup for me either with a different account. Guess they might have stopped it?

Check the main Sygic app and see.

@Chaos Do you have Sygic India installed already in your phone? I don't see the app in Play store. Sygic website also redirects to the Play store, which still shows the same Not Found message.

@raksrules Navigation not really needed. If the app can just point out the shortest route available between point A and point B, that is enough. Will check City Maps 2go. Does it have detailed info like Sygic maps did?

There are other app markets too apart from Play Store: http://www.1mobile.com/sygic--mapmyindia--gps-1030186.html
Keep the .APK stored somewhere for later use and you are good to go even if the app doesn't display for you. A good site for downloading and storing the .APKs (non-paid apps): http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/

Put the Sygic link in the site and download the .APK from there.

I just clicked the link you put in your post from a device that does not have sygic. It installed just fine!

Sygic works fine for me also.

However, Google is getting better and better day by day. A day is not far when we have offline navigation also.

@Chaos and @krishnandu I am aware of that app. Unfortunately, it does not have India maps. The description does not mention India maps. I downloaded and installed it just now, and yes, no India maps.

@ayanavish Thanks for that link. Will try that source.

@jsmithe Will check it if the source mentioned above does not work.

@raksrules Tried City Maps 2go. After downloading the maps, within a couple of seconds, it force closed. Happened more than twice. Promptly uninstalled.

They have pretty old map, tried them 2-3 times, doesn't help too much in India. Sygic is far better.

Most likelihood, Google intentionally has not given true offline capabilities to its map app. From version 6 to 7, they removed the straight-forward option of map caching to a more subtle method of making an area offline.

@xtremevicky Are you talking about the link provided by Chaos above? Or have you installed the app few months ago, and it still works?

I have it installed when it was free on the play store. Using that since then as the phone has not been formatted.

Google will offer this in the near future.

Doesnt Google maps work without Internet in other countries? (I am not sure about this,

Got a reply from Sygic when asked about the Indian maps

Hello Vivek,

Thank you for contacting Sygic.

My name is Adam, your support representative, and I will be handling your request from now on. I will do my best to help you with your request.

At the moment we do not have the maps of India in Sygic as we and our former map provider for India - MapmyIndia brought the contract to an end. But we are currently in the process of negotiation with a new provider - TomTom about the maps of India. That means, that the maps of India will be available in Sygic in the close future - when the negotiation of the terms and conditions of the new contract is over.

I will consider this case solved for now, however if you still have any other questions, feel free to re-open this request by replying to this e-mail. I will get back to you as soon as possible for proper resolution. In this case please do not rate my response yet.

Thank you for understanding and apologies for the inconvenience.

Best regards,

Adam

Tom Tom maps probably have spoken street names also. At least it had in USA. MMI maps did not have spoken street names IIRC.
No Tom Tom India for iOS yet, that's a bummer :(
