While the other thread http://www.techenclave.com/general-talk/rate-the-last-movie-you-saw-63501.html is an excellent resource for Indian and English films (although you have to search from lots of spam :P ), it has very little recommendations for foreign language films. I know for a fact that there are quite a few members here who are into non-Indian, non-Hollywood movies. So, requesting all such members to suggest some good films fitting these criteria.

Please Note: Should be a non-Indian, non-Hollywood movie. (English movies from other countries are acceptable, as long as they are not mainstream Holywood pictures).

Please mention some very basic info with the suggestion, if possible. At least, mention the language and genre of the movie, and whether or not it has NSFAA moments. ;)

dude watch city of god (brazilian)....awesome movie..very interesting

and watch INFERNAL AFFAIRS...(THIS MOVIE WAS REMADE AS DEPARTED IN HOLLYWOOD)...ITS A TRIOLOGY.

AND GERMAN MOVIE RUN LOLA RUN(LOLA RENNT)...SUPERB MOVIE WITH GOOD BGM.

Hmm, non-hollywood, i can technically say that Hollywood instead borrowed from these two orginally whilst the last borrows from Hollywood.

La Femme Nikita by Jean Luc Besson much better than the one with Bridget Fonda
The 7 Samurai was the inspiration for Hollywood's The Magnificent Seven western.
Lock, Stock and Two smoking barrels, [STRIKE]British version of Tarantino's Pulp fiction[/STRIKE]. Britain's answer to Trantino's Pulp Fiction, can't say which of the two is better but its awesome. I would be surprised if you've not heard of this one, actually

DUDE lock stock and two smoking barrels is way different from pulp fiction and lock stock is not a remake.....lock stock is a british film.

both are my fav movies and fav directors...lock stock by guy ritchie.....and pulp is by tarantinos.

Are you joking?

Anyways,

Waltz with Bashir - Animated movie about Lebanese Civil War/Israel-Lebanon war

Zaitochi - Blind samurai dude

Z - French political thriller

Le Samourai - French film about a solitary assassin, recommended

Hero - Pretty famous, my favorite Chinese martial arts movie

I love the feel of the sad ghost town feel of japanese movies.
Monday (2000)
This one's a comedy though.

@intacto
Lock stock and pulp fiction are similar because both have interesting screenplays. Actually tarantino is liked because of the screenplays he writes. You should watch some of his old interviews on youtube and see how he talks. He played "himself" in *reservoir dogs* in the beginning of the movie where he offers his take on madonnas "like a virgin" track.

@broadway but jus havin interesting screenplays doesnt make movies similiar.....yeah tru abt tarantino...and same is the case with guy ritchie..

and watch INTACTO (spanish movie)...one of my fav movies.

Filantropica, Let the Right One In, Mit Liv Som Hund, Linda Linda Linda, Seom, Shi-gan, City of Lost Children, El Mariachi etc.

The Lives of Others(German) - About east german police spying on a writer and his lover

Black Book (German) - A jewish girl becomes a works undercover in germany following the death of her loved ones

No Man's Land (Bosnian) - Two men get stuck in no mans land during Bosnia and Herzegovina war

Stalingrad (German) - Depicts the battle of Stalingrad

L'auberge espagnole(Spanish/German/French) - A comedy/drama of students from few European countries living in the same appartment

The Motorcycle Diaries (Spanish) - Story of Che Guevara, his begining days, before he took up arms

Taxi movie series 1 - 4 . - movie series about a pizza delivery boy (who hates cops) turned taxi driver who always ends up helping a clumsy cop.

French comedy at its best. Movies have some nsfaa moments.

I must have watched these movies around 4-5 times in a year.

^ +1for malena.... initially i used to watch only few scenes of malena ;) ( aah! monica belluci ;) )....then one day i saw the whole movie....seriously one of the best movies.....felt sad for monica in the end

Everytime we have threads like this, it just turns into a post your favourite movie thread with no description or input whatsoever. There's not much point in just listing a film. At the very least mention, the langauge and genre like the OP requested.

Anyway are we looking at any specific era? I'm just going to list a few contemporary (last ten years) films off the top of my head

A Prophet (Drama|French) - A movie that flows really well. It follows the life of an Arab man who lands up in a French prison. A prison that's rife with racial tension.

Irreversible (Drama|French) - This is probably the most intense film I ever watched. Definetley NSFW, NMS, NFSA and any more 'Not Safe' acronyms you can throw at it. It's a movie about the sherr pointlesness of revenge, vigilantism and violence but is told in a very unique way. The entire movie is show to you in reverse, which is a clever way of showing you how nothing is irreversible. Warning: This film features one of the most graphic rape scenes in film history. Also, the camera work and editing will make you physically ill (this is intentional).

Memories of a Murder
(Crime|Korean) - It retells the story of series of murders that occured in South Korea a few decades back. As it is based on a real story, it doesn't follow any typical formula but rather lets you feel the actual frustuations the characters face. If you have seen Zodiac, it's a bit similar. I'd personally say it's a better fiilm purley thanks to conclusion and the final shot.

How is "The Lives of others", what should I expect out of this one?

Will I be able to enjoy it as it will be my first non-english/hindi movie, although I've seen Priceless (Audrey Tautou is just amazing!) ?

Seen quite a few of the films mentioned thus far.. like Irreversible, La Femme Nikita, No Man's Land, The Motorcycle Diaries, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Waltz with Bashir, etc.. Been watching some of the movies being aired on World Movies channel, and I have to admit, there are some real gems among those.

People who haven't seen the following can watch these: My Sassy Girl (Korean romance/comedy), Oldboy (Korean drama), A Tale of Two Sisters (Korean thriller/mystery)

P.S: Please post at least the language and genre of the films you recommend. Otherwise, it kills the purpose of this thread.
