Guys,

Need to buy a good rig; I am stuck in between the 2 processors:
  • Intel Xeon Processor E3-1275
  • Intel i7 3770
On Paper, I checked the specs in the Intel site and both look the same to me. Though the E3-1275 look to be priced a little on the higher side I guess
My main intentions:
  • Gaming
  • HD movies
  • Internet
  • Small CAD work
  • Absolutely No Overclocking
Can u please suggest which one to get as My dealer said he can get me a deal on the Xeon processor.

Like all the other xeons e3-1275 has ECC RAM support which is very essential for cad, 3dmax etc. ECC RAMs have very high precision which is needed to avoid error/crash during rendering or modeling/designing .
But you need a mobo which support this type of ram and such motherboards, AFAIK, are quite expensive then the non-ECC LGA 1155 mobos - plus e3-1275 is costlier than i7 - plus your CAD work is small so I would suggest you go with i7 eyes closed

Thanks @hitesh12
E3-1275 has LGA 1155 chipset so motherboard is pretty cheap and same as i7.
Also, I am actually getting it cheaper than i7 so my question.

Also, I was told that ivy Bridge chips are buggy compared to Sandy Bridge...Is that true?

Ivy bridge has poorer heat conduction tim and people get better temp and overclock after delidding the ivy bridge.

I know that buddy. What I was saying that you'll need a LGA 1155 mobo with ECC ram support which is costly. Non-ecc are comparatively are quite cheap

Edit : And AFAIK there is no general fact that ivy chips are buggy compared to sandy

If ECC and Vt-d is a must for you, only then a Xeon makes sense. The Xeon is a mature Sandybridge, while the i7 is an Ivy so you get roughly the same performance but lower power consumption on the i7. Also if you don't plan on using the intel graphics that only makes the case for i7 stronger.

Thanks man...
But My dealer said that Xeon Supports ECC; while ECC RAMs are better and ensure no data corruption - the normal RAM's also work like a charm.

I checked the intel page as well for i7 and Xeon wherein it Said that i7 did not have support for ECC and Xeon had support for ECC.
So does this mean all RAMs will work?

Do you need ECC? If you answer no, then you don't need the Xeon.

You need ECC RAM if you'll be running a stock exchange or controlling the MARS rover, where every bit in your memory is important. For the applications you've listed, a couple of flipped bits won't hurt you at all so I see no reason for ECC. Get the i7 with standard RAM.

Oh when you said will this work, I though you were asking if the ram had ecc feature or not. But yeah non-ecc ram will work flawlessly.
Just to summarize it all, you need a ecc ram, ecc mobo and ecc proccy to be able to ecc. Have you calculated how much this "ecc" rig is costing you ?

That mars thing got a little exaggerated :p
But yes, if I had been in op's place I would have gone with non-ecc rig or a rig with ecc mobo if there was a chance of heavy cad in future

Is money growing on trees these days ? I want such a tree.

Does his application need Xeons and ECC ? The answer is no, so why the rest of the discussion at all about how much it costs etc etc. I am curious how the process even started. Perhaps this is what they think of when they say half knowledge is worse than no knowledge.

I don't need ECC but as I said earlier; I am getting a XEON at a price cheaper than i7 so I am chucking the idea of i7.
ECC - I don't care; and thats the point of this whole discussion
XEON has a better GPU Arch. and overall is a better processor and I am getting it at a cheaper price
My plan is to get a Standard Mobo and RAM with the XEON .

@TheIndian... its always good to read a thread and understand before commenting so that you don't sound like a jackass.
But anyways...choice is urs.
I have enough knowledge, have been in TE since the forum was started, and have been building PC's since 6 years now; so I know what I am doing.
Ur post on the other hand - gave no inputs to the question in hand not gave any other inputs; its just was a random bash which I think is cauz ur are PMSing....
Dude...have respect for others in the forum; Everyone earns money by working day and night.

Suggest me one b/n the 2. I am getting the zeon at almost 25% less than the i7 (in real XEON is expensive)
Intel Xeon Processor E3-1275
Intel i7 3770

Also, suggest me a mobo.
I already have the below RAM.

Perhaps you should read your own and other posts before you start ranting. The OP sounds like it has been framed by a noob, which after so many years you are clearly not. At no point till now you did you say your dealer could get the ZEON is 25% cheaper than the i7, so far the only indication was - it was a good deal. Try putting (and obtaining) all the information across to get an accurate answer instead of trying to palm off your own asinine mistakes by name calling.

Wonder what or who were you trying to achieve (or test) by omitting to mention all the information at hand like the savings or components like RAM already on hand in the OP

Don't wanna get into a fight but my 1st post clearly says that I am getting a deal on the XEON and that was the sole reason for my creating the thread.
Anyways, since u have no input to give I guess u can PM me the bashing and save the space for come useful comments.

I am still not clear what my mistakes are though? And I don't really understand why are u so frustrated?

A deal - you should have quantified/clarified the deal - that it is cheaper than even the i7 - That puts things in an all new perspective.
AND That you already that the RAM - (no RAM discussion required)

With the above info on hand all that was needed was the mobo - my suggestion http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131725 - Dunno if its available in India though.

Given that i7 and Xeon both retail for the same price.... would a deal on XEON always mean that it would be cheaper than i7??

BTW: I was planning to go for
GA-B75M-D3H
