PC Peripherals Suggestion needed on PSU

I moved into a new place recently and 2 of my major things have gone kaput. First was my PC, which crashed after booting up and now won't power up and second was the 3 RRODs on my 360. Called up the customer care of 360 and they said that the problem is with the power supply as the power brick remains at orange and won't turn green or red. So that's sorted out and the replacement has already been sent.
The second problem seems to me that the PSU of the PC is out. I have the CM 600w (don't remember the model) and suspect that the fuse is blown but didnt want to get a nasty capacitor shock and so didnt open the PSU as such. So my options are to either get the PSU repaired (which might take up considerable time) or get a new PSU (cheapo one). I have a 8800GT with me, which I dont use nowadays and planning to keep it aside if buying a new cheaper, but decent, PSU.

So the question is should I buy a new PSU and if so any suggestions for a decent one for about 1k or so or get the CM PSU repaired? Thanks for reading through and for any suggestions in advance.

Isn't Cm600 under warranty??? If not, try getting CM600 repaired, but check first whether the charges will stay below rs.300 for repairs.... or else get a new PSU.. as you running 8800gt, i suggest you Gigabyte superb 460 at 1850/-

always keep a PSU for backup.Get the CM PSU repaired and buy the Gigabyte superb 1850 or corsair CX 400 2400 (recommended). While repairing ask the technician to put Japanese caps.I guess you were using the default power cord(no earthing pin) that came with the Cm 600w.

Nope.. I had put together the system 3 years back :) So no warranty.. Also, I don't use the 8800gt as such nowadays for gaming (using 360 for that) and might pull it out and so guess lesser power PSUs should also be fine.

I think it had an earthing pin if I remember correctly.. Will get the Gigabyte one mostly then as I don't want to invest much money into this machine again.. Might overhaul the system 6 months down the line..

BTW, I hope the issue is only with the PSU and with nothing else.. Any quick way to figure out whether anything else is blown (MoBo or something)?

Chuck the idea of getting the CM600 repaired. Get yourself a good entry level power supply. Post a budget and we might suggest you something suitably.

The possible reason why your equipment might have given up is possibly because of the power surges. Do you use a good surge protector or a UPS? Or do you have your equipment connected directly to the wall socket?

I do use a UPS, but on that day had not connected the CPU to it.. Wanted to switch the machine on after shifting to see if everything is fine.. My mistake.. :S

Budget is 1k, stretchable upto 2k max..

Get a new psu and check your system, only then you can conclude whether any other component is gone bad.
Will have to do that.. Also looks like I need to use surge protector to protect my items (mainly the 360)..

2k can get you a Gigabyte Superb 460W or the FSP Saga 400W (the latter is essentially the OEM for the Superb 460W). The Corsair CX430 and SeaSonic SS-400 are slightly better models but they overshoot your budget by a couple of hundreds. Take your pick.

I guess you own CM Extreme Power 600W, if yes, then no need to spend any amount (even Rs 100) on that PSU. It is starting to show its age and would fail any time in future. Before your PC components become victim of this Time bomb it is highly advised to get rid of it.

If you don't have moolah to spend on a decent PSU, atleast get a Gigabyte Superb or a Corsair CX430 ~ 2.3k :)

Thanks guys..

So I believe that the Gigabyte Superb 460 can safely power my 8800GT as well, right? Will get it this weekend.. And possibly a surge protector for my 360 whose power brick also is out..

Hi guys,

Got the Corsair CX430 yesterday for 2.2k.. But the sad part is that my PC still won't start.. Looks like the PSU is not the culprit.. Will the problem be with the motherboard then? The MoBo is Intel DG33FB.. Don't have the moolah to overhaul the entire machine now.. So have to get to the root cause and get it repaired/replaced.. Appreciate any help I can get on this..

A bit of detailed description of the problem will be appreciated. Are you able to hear some beeps or your PC won't even boot?Anything on screen like "no signal" display or any other clues that can lead us in our crime scene investigation. :P

Try reseating your RAM,and check that every connection is tight and good.It looks like either the CPU heatsink is disturbed or the mobo is dead.

Perform a PSU test: short the green and and black wires and see if the fan rotates.

Video here:

Perform it on both PSU's to make sure that the Corsair is not DOA. If PSU's are fine then it could be the motherboard. Follow instructions in Ameet148's post above

Very informative video boogeyman. Couldn't test the PSU yesterday. Will check it today. Also could have tested the old CM PSU earlier to check whether it was the real culprit.

Ok guys.. Checked my CM 600 PSU as per the steps in the video link given by boogeyman and voila, the PSU is working :S Also tried reseating the RAM and checked whether any component is loose, but no use.. the CPU won't turn on.. So now can safely say that the PSU is not the culprit and have an extra new PSU.. Also there's no beep from the machine or nothing is displayed on the screen.. The next thing would be to check the power on button of the CPU whether its working fine.. Otherwise guess MoBo would be the issue.. Any thoughts?

It might be worthwhile to take your components (CPU & RAM) to a friends place and check if they're working in his system. This would indicate that your motherboard is faulty. If it doesn't, then either of those components is faulty.

Also, when you connect the PSU to your system and turn it on, does the CPU fan start?

When the PSU is turned on, CPU fan does not start. As for checking the CPU & RAM at a friend's place, not sure whether I'll be able to do that as most of my friends have lappies.. :S

junk_qwe actually the video instructions that you followed is itself the culprit. If you are able to turn on a fan through a molex cable on a PSU,doesn't mean that the PSU is working and healthy. The proper way is to check it with a multimeter, which that dumbass video maker hasn't done.

It's pretty much your PSU thats gone bad.take it to a professional, and let him check it with a multimeter.I have faced the same situation, where one of your molex will be dead and the others will be working.

And the first step of troubleshooting is to have a properly working PSU,without that no matter how you reseat RAM or CPU heatsink or any other thing,it won't work.

Thanks Ameet148. Like you know I've got a new PSU as well. I had followed the video and checked the old PSU and since it was working fine didn't bother testing the new one. Even if like you say the PSU is still bad what are the chances of the new one also being dead? Id think its slim though can't rule it out.
