Hi, can you guys give suggestions for a used car for a budget of 2.5-3L.

Also can you enumerate, all the things I need to look for buying a used car, considering the fact that for all practical purpose this will be first car, last one was sold 10+ years back :)

I was thinking to buy either from that Mahindra seconds showroom, or the vitesse second hand dealership.

Usage will be minimal. And its not possible for me to stretch the budget, due to the current economic recession. Any tips will be welcome.

What are your usage patterns, expectations and what have you looked at so far ?

would recommend getting something thats refurbished by the manufacturer like maruti true value and comes with a 6 month warranty or so. It will turn out more expensive but might give you some peace of mind

2.5-3lacs will get you a decent used Lancer/OHC. I'd say those are the best deals you can get in that range. Stay away from old mahindra vehicles unless you want to spend a fortune repairing them - even then they'd be unreliable.

Hmm actually usage will be really low. Am looking at a used Santro or Getz which is not very old etc. Dont wanna be bogged down with maintenance charges. Was more keen on getting a decent condition getz, now thats where the prob, is. I am a noob as far as 4 wheelers go, so what all should I be looking at, buying a use car? I am pretty certain the odometer would be tampered, so any other tell tale signs that the car is not abused much etc?

And yep will be either buying from Maruti true value or Mahindra's second showroom (they keep all cars, not just Mahindra ones)

dude, u 'll never go wrong with a maruti.

At your budget, u could go for a pre-owned wagon R or even an esteem.

Do make sure u see the odometer n of course underneath the hood.

either tru value or mahindra's First choice are good. they will give u good finance as well but if u could find a car in ur friend circle u cud get one for cheaper rates

OT- have you considered Nano?

Serves your purpose and saves money in times of recession, and you get proper warranty..

Else get from true value, they wil give a few servicing free..

Well in my building 2 peeps bought hyundai accent.....both under 3......though one person has horrible avg of 6-7(accent viva)...but fully top class except some speaker deck issue.......other frnd gets 11 and 14 on highway....though he got it quite cheap for 1.8l for 2000 model.....it has issues like old battery and speaker stuff..plus seat cover and all

But to b frank......this is their first car....

When u go in some event peeps reallly see them as some value person thinking its their old car.....seeing the size......which sntro stuff wont provide...

Though it might differ frm person

I have an old santro..and to b frank..it has high maintenance cost+ low resale value......so ill say stay away frm santro atleast...for maruti all says vfm stuff.....but peeps suggest for 3l old car...go for old honda city and all

my personal take....next year ill buy a spark or estilo(i saw some black model and i fell luv with it).....no shining all..better settle with new and atleast forget for 5-6 years any kharcha......those peeps of my building get scared when they hear any odd sound in car and one even getting ready to try official service centre...as he is worried....his prob wont b solved

one more point check this site......it has good articles according to our market

i wud recommend to go out there n buy the car in Best Mechanical Condition which fits ur budget of 3L.

Alto or Wagon R r nice options.

wait for 3-4 months, 2nd cars will flood in market once nano's are on road :D my serious advice.

It's the motorcyclists who'd prefer going in for a nano(to haul their family around)...
NOT THOSE HAVING 800s,ALTOs leavealone Sedans !

but nano will drop the values of alto/m800 which will have a domino effect and reduce the prices of bigger cars.

:hap2: :hap2: :hap2: messa waiting.........will hunt for a good zen then....

back to the topic....OHC ftw....

hmm i feel you should go a with pre-owned Maruti ..maybe a WagonR or something.

arent there any 1-2 year old swifts in the market for 3 lakhs ..or do they cost more ?

also one of my uncle bought a brand new Alto ,under 3 lakhs .dont remember which model is it exactly .:P but it wasnt anything fancy.I think even power windows were absent..

do checkout , a new Alto would also be a good option.

guys the zen estilo, despite looking pretty girly, is a very good deal, since apparently its not selling very well ( hmm, I wonder why :P) try to bargain, and you should be able to get an estilo at alto-ish prices. Dont buy an alto now. its price will be dropped in a year or two once the nano reaches critical mass and maruti starts feeling the heat. And the 800cc engine cannot meet BS IV norms , and is gonna be phased out soon

Sorry off topic::
M800 has already told....they most probably will stop its production as it wont b able to compete on emission norms.....for that they need to do huge spending and that too for cheap model...it would b better to stop production.....As wht i heard in business news channels

I believe ppl. having small hatches like Alto, Santro, Spark etc. won't sell their car for a nano.

The nano is purely for the first-time buyers looking for an entry-level buy,a replacement for the conventional 2-wheeler :S

@Aces170

Don't try considering a second hand sedan for under 3L.It's prone to have problems unless you know for sure its well maintained and rest assured its atleast 4-5yrs old !

Good deals for sedans are mostly above 3.5L !

Rest My Case :|

(Try not to Flame and continue with the discussions)

agreed, but the point is , for the traditional buyer of the second hand alto/zen/800, the nano is an attractive offer. Hence the second hand values of these cars will take a hit.
