True offline maps only come in dedicated GPS nav devices.

Waze us closer to google maps that Sygic.

In Sygic, the maps are preloaded so you don't need a data connection for loading them and it has quite a few POIs to do an offline search as well.

You will need a data connection for a good GPS lock (A-GPS) and google search for POIs which are not there in the preloaded maps.

Nope, Nokia Here and Maps support true offline maps as well.

Sygic afaik does not require Internet connection even for POI search (stored ones). Google search yes it requires data.
This is true at least for the iOS version that I have. Shouldn't be different for android I believe.

I thought true offline maps do not depend on data or mobile connection. Sygic to the least depends on Network Connection

Sygic works without any data connection.

It also has preloaded data points (e.g. some hospital in Bandra) so you may not get exact name of the building or place if not already loaded on Sygic but something near by.

Works best when you need to drive without any GPRS use.

Does Waze works same way ? Any waze users ?

As I said before, waze is data dependent. It downloads maps just like google maps

The best part of Waze and something unique to it is the ability to add/edit your own roads. It is greatly helpful when you have new roads cropping every other day or old roads become one way.

Damn ! The price is 499 now ? Bought it during the buy one get one free offer in Dec. Still got to use it for 5 months so I shouldn't complain.

I dunno why people find it useless without data as I found the maps very useful on the road where no network was available.

Not sure why people are saying sygic is requiring data connection. Can anyone tell me what exactly it requires data for ? To use A-GPS ?
Is it problem with actual navigation or even getting a GPS fix in the first place ?
I will try to use sygic tomorrow on my iPhone and report back, i will shut off data completely and check whether it is able to get a fix under the sky.

Sygic does not need a data connection to work. The lock time with data off might be a bit longer than if you have data enabled but it should work without it. You would ofcourse need data if you are using any of its community features like traffic report etc.

Whatever the case might be, I find sygic better in navigation and route calculation.
With google maps, you do have more POIs but the same search is incorporated in sygic as well. Secondly if you lose data connection the google maps becomes redundant in navigation. I find it useful only when I'm in a hurry to know where a place is.

It's a steal really at 199. Would have bought it eyes closed if I hadn't already purchased it earlier.
