I have got win2003 server SP1 installed. Recently I have noticed the system is very slow.

Whenever I checked the Windows Task Managet (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), I found the "System idle process" consumed 70% of CPU energy.

Though I have been using many utilities to disable all programs that start with windows OS.

Do I need to disable some services as well (I am not familiar with this )?

Kindly look at the link below for details

The process that I have got intel pentium M 1.88 GHz

the explorer seems to take up insane amount of mem 27k is insane i am unning 26 windows and its arnd 11k.
maybe some hidden process as virus is running as child process and injected in ur explorer shell which is a parent process...
u better try using some av and deep scanning ur file system.
also whats ur sys ram? and pm 1.88 ghz is enuf to run 2003.

Do you think it will be different story if i use Firefox or Netscape ?

also whats ur sys ram?
512 MB.
Have you noticed if there is something abnormal with the "Windows Task Manager" ?

havent used 2003 sp1 a lot so cant say specifically .. but there are no visible abonrmal process .. one abnormality is explorer.exe is taking uo too much mem.
no it shud be all good with IE only.
do this try try a clean reinstall or say y dint u use 2000 or xp.

Are you running Indexing Service that uses idle cpu cycles to perform some operations? Try disabling such services. That should help a lot.

Raghu.

As far as i remember I have not enabled such services.

But have you seen them through Windows Task Manager that I posted in the forum ?

click start > run type services.msc and chekc for it!
@ raghu > afaik indexing service wont use 70% of 1.8 ghz pentium m.

zillah mate, your question is totally off the mark - it is not how much cpu energy System Idle Process(SID) is consuming but the other way around i.e - SID shows how much energy is free(72 % in your case), 20 % is consumed by windows task manager whose screenie you have posted, 4% by explorer, 2% by broadcom wireless systray, & 2% by system - so dont really see what is wrong with your system.
An option in the Windows XP Task Manager that indicates what percentage of time the CPU is currently doing nothing but waiting for work. If no applications are running that the user is aware of (although there may always be some tasks running in the background), the percentage can be in the high 90s.
____________

In Windows XP, the System Idle Process is, essentially, a counter which measures how much idle capacity the CPU has at any given time. Although it is not actually a process, SIP runs in the background and constantly monitors processing bandwidth, occupied memory and the Windows virtual paging file. System users can find it in the Windows Task Manager, under "SYSTEM"; however, it cannot be terminated.
My SID goes upto 99%(when idle) & thats a good sign when no applications are running - so basically your system is fine.

About it being slow - there can be other reasons for it & it has nothing at all to do with SID.

You are right, I should not have said that, it was mistake.

Additional information:

When a user opens the Windows Task Manager they may notice that the System Idle Process is high and be concerned about all their system resources being taken up.

Answer:
When a computer is Idle it will have a high System Idle process under the CPU often in the 90's. This is completely normal for a computer as it waits for something to do. If you leave the Task Manager open a program you sill notice that the System Idle process decreases its CPU usage.

I have got 3 partitions on the HD 40 GB.

C partition (10 GB) for windows 2003 , free diks left is 900 MB ,,,,Can this cause the problem for the system to be slow down ?

click start > run type services.msc and chekc for it!
Thanks for that, I am aware of this command, by what was my question what should I disbale , there are many services are running automatically .

One more question

1- When we look at the "Windows Task Manager" we have got two tabs out of four which are :

"Applications" and "Processes",,,when I click the "Processes" tab, I can see the name of applications (like MSN messenger, Yahoo, thunderbird,,,,etc) that are running and I can see many other services are running as well.

And when I click the "Applications" tab, I can see only the name of the applications that are running.

It is easy and straightforward to disable an application that we do not like to be run with winodws startup, since we know the name of the application and the function for that application, by using (msconfig, startup utilities).

What about a service, how can I dsiable them ? is there any specific procedure to do that ? I am aware of command "services.msc" and then we have three options for "Startup Type" tab:
A- Manual
B- Disabled
C- Automatic.

Or msconfig then "Services" tab.

On both cases that I knew, there are heaps of services. Since I have not installed them; I am not sure which one to disable and which one to leave it as it is!!!!!
