Called up DishTV people asked about the usb interface HDD's and if i can play it back on PC. The first two people did not know anything about it but when i asked for the supervisor he told me what i was wondering.

According to him the files are encrypted and then stored on the usb HDD this is done via a H/W encryption and using a unique key "Different for all boxes meaning you cant play back your recordings on some on else's box
<
" I asked about the recorder settings he had no idea oh well.

My TataSky HD recordings dont really look all that great compared to the preview/surf mode so there must be high compression going on. I wonder how well others record HD.

i use a hauppauge hd tv tuner. This is the quality in which it records

Got a call back from a local computer hardware store i had asked about buying a capturing card for HDMI or S-Video. Well i know about TV tuners which have S-video in but they are less than meant to record at 720 × 576 in top notch quality or for that matter 1080i in any case.

They have the following items in stock:

Aver DVD EZMaker Gold:- 2100

Aver DarkCrystal HD Capture Pro:- 6700

Aver Game Broadcaster HD:- 9000

Which should i buy i am inclined to get the first one because its the cheapest

and full DVD Pal resolution is not that bad to record 720p humm. I mean the cheapest HDMI 1080p recorder is very expensive compared to the first option what do you all say?

why do you want a 1080p recorder? tatasky broadcast supports max 1080i only. also the cards mentioned above don't do justice to the quality of broadcast. tatasky broadcasts hd channels in 5.1 surround, and none of the cards above seem to support that.

Ofcourse if you are looking to capture and store the video in all formats. Then you are pirating the content. Hence the restrictions. I think it is a welcome move over the limit set by TATA Sky.

You guys think all the DTH providers should allow us to copy and share content just like that? Who does not see a problem in that statment?

Wow nice specs AVC with CABAC and B Frames but that 50fps is uncalled for
<
also why no 448kbps on the AC3 stream?

How much did you buy it for and also whats the exact model number?

The dealer does not have a 1080i capture card and the tv tuners are all SVideo/RCA ones

Its not that every one wants to pirate but sometimes things need to be recorded and i mean permanently not something that can be lost if the current box dies or you replace the HD box with a new 4K resolution box.

Would the recorded content play on the new box it will not in the case of DishTV or Tata Sky. an alternative is needed.

cause its 720 progressive HDTV in PAL broadcast? besides, i've set the capture card to capture serials in broadcast quality. so that quality is what TataSky is giving out. i cant increase the sound quality.

50p/60p is a progressive format and is used in high-end HDTV systems. While it is not technically part of the ATSC or DVB broadcast standards, it is rapidly gaining ground in the areas of set-top boxes and video recordings.

the model is hauppauge colossus 1212 i think. it costs 15k in india, but around half of that from amazon.

anyway the streams here on indian channels are not worth recording, cause of the "if you have any complaint" indian broadcasting federation scrolling text in middle of the serials and also cause the channels put some stupid tiny little ads in top and bottom of the screen while broadcasting them. plus if you noticed the numbers that keep popping up in middle of the pic every now and then.

plus if you listen to the audio from most of the channels (except the hd ones), you wont feel like recording them. they sound like something recorded of radio 25 years back.

i'd rather buy some tv serial dvd/ bluray from amazon or other sites than record content from the waves here for archiving.

Its Rs.9750 at Primeabgb

http://www.primeabgb...art&Itemid=9999

I called them up its Rs300 for shipping to Shimla so they might give it all for Rs.10k which is not bad at all. They say the product has warranty from the company and not dealer warranty.

#sanjiv, you can get it for less via ICCWorld or other 3rd party shippers.

the tuner has some drawbacks too. it does not recheck the audio stream while changing channels. eg. At startup, the tatasky sd channel has stereo sound. so the tuner will set audio to stereo. if you change to an hd channel with dolby sound, it will not recheck the stream for audio, and so volume goes mute in hd channels. the only way around this is to retune the tuner everytime you change between hd and sd. This is not due to hardware fault, but its cause of the wintv software i guess. if you don't retune channels and record the program when the software gives no volume, you can still see the recorded file has flawless ac3 audio if you play it back in a media player.
