Hello Karthik,
I need your expertise once again. Due to unavoidable circumstances, I will have to bring the cost down to 17,500. Karthik, I'm sorry to bother you a second time but I simply fear going to Nehru Place and buy a pc on the 'advice' of the vendors there.

Deducting the price of the LCD you suggested ie Dell E1910 IN - Rs.5925 - we are left with 11,500 for the following -

(I do not require speakers, webcam or any other accessory, just the above.)

This time around I have no expectations [can't afford them:@], just a decent home pc.
Karthik, dig into your magic hat and give me a config.

(If possible, let the config be such that I could attach a graphics card later)

We are excited about Windows 7 and would like to use it on the above system.
If you deem it okay, you could also suggest me a smaller LCD.

Karthik, the next time you come to Delhi you'll have a treat waiting for you [I mean it, my intention is not simply to butter, not entirely that is :)]

1. Processor - AthlonII X2 240 - 2850/-
2. Motherboard - Asus M2N68-AMPLUS - 2350/-
3. RAM - Transcend/ Kingston/ ADATA 800 MHz 2GB RAM - 2000/-
4. Hard Disk - Seagate 250GB 7200.12 Series - 1825/-
5. DVD Drive - Samsung / LG 22X Sata DVDRW - 1100/-
6. Cabinet and power supply - Zebronics Bijli Cabinet with SMPS -1700/-
7. UPS - Numeric 600VA - 1600/-
8. Keyboard and mouse - Logitech Combo - 700/-
Total: 14125 :(
Better get the UPS later if there is not much of a power issue in your place.
So that would bring the total down to 12525/-
Then you can compromise on the cabby and get the ZEB-10B(Zebronics) - 950/-
Total:11775/- Further 650rs can be saved by opting for 1GB DDRII RAM for 1350/-.
Total: 11125/-
Dont compromise on anyother component. The motherboard has a PCIE slot and you can add a GPU later.
P.S: Try gettin the Biostar785G mobo as it is much better than the Asus one. But that would mean a rise in cost to 12.5k but its worth it :)

Thanks a ton Karthik! I waited all day for your reply. I was getting anxious because I need to buy the rig tomorrow.

Nice configuration suggested by karthi. Well I am giving little useful modifications.
1. ASUS M2N68 AMPLUS don't have any 3 pin power connector soldered on board for auxiliary fans, big NO to overclocking, Very weak 6xxx/7xxx graphics. So suggesting Biostar A760G M2+ with only 400/- more would be much better choice with plus points like HD3000 graphics, DVI and six SATA ports.

2. Seagate 320GB SATA cost 1850~1900.

3. People reporting bad after sale services for Transcend so we should stick with other options like Kingston / Corsair / G Skill.

hey guys i want to buy a gaming pc i have thought of an config but confused on certain aspects pls help me out.....

Purpose : Gaming!!!
Budget : max 60K

Processor : Intel core i5 750 2.6ghz -Rs 9975
Motherboard :Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 -Rs 6250
or

Processor :Phenom X4 Quad X4 - 965 BE 3.4ghz -Rs 9600
Motherboard :?????

i am confused between the two they costs almost the same here (just a diff of 400) and if i shud go with amd then wat mobo????

RAM : OCZ ddr3 1333 2X2 gb -Rs 7000
GPU : Sapphire ATI HD 5850 -Rs 18200

actually i am shocked to see sppahire cards costing 1K more than XFX in richie street chennai.so where can i get this card for cheaper price in india???

Cabinet : ?????
SMPS : Corsair VX550 -Rs 5000

and also pls suggest me a good cabinet

Monitor : LG LCD with TV 21.5" M227WA -Rs 13000

as i don have a seperate tv and to connect my STB which only has av out and dont want to invest on tv tuner cards n stuffs i tot this would be a good option as it is full HD(1080p), your suggestions???

Thank you.

Dear Karthik,
The final configuration is as follows -
AMD Athlon II X2 240 Rs. 2900
Biostar TA785GE 128 MB Sideport Rs. 4300
Kingston 2 GB DDR2 8ooMhz Rs. 1970
Seagate 250GB SATAII 7200.12 Series Rs. 1790
Sony DVD-RW Rs. 1120
Logitech Newtouch K/b Rs. 240
Dell Optical mouse Rs. 190
(+Microtek 600Va Ups Rs. 1580)
All of the above from Computer Empire

Dell 18.5" LCD S1909W (from Cost to Cost) Rs. 5990 (This one has VGA+DVI input)

I purchased Zebronics ZEB 38-R cabinet (with 2 side fans) from Aastha Computers for Rs. 1180. Bijli with power supply was for Rs. 1850. However, the ZEB 38-R gave me a headache that day. First the Computer Empire assembler told me that the one of the side fans was not working. Then he told me that the power supply was faulty. I got the fan and the power supply changed.
A minor problem as of now is that the front mic-in and headphone slots are not working.
There's a slight regret about settling for a cheaper cabinet.
However, the system is running great and the onboard graphics are better than I expected. I don't have a benchmark result yet but Battlefield 2 looks gorgeous on it. Needless to say Windows 7 is beauty in motion.
Thanks for the tremendous help.
With immense gratitude,
Setonfire

Virus32, you're right about Transcend. If you need to obtain their service post purchase, you might get back your product only after 4 months. This is not word of mouth but from Accel, the company that handles service and replacement for a number of companies like Seagate, Kingston and others. In view of the bad after sales service Accel has stopped working for Transcend because customers are giving them a hard time. I too have submitted my mp3 player and hoping I get it soon.

Dear Karthik,

You have done a great job to compile all under this roof!
I would need your help to make my FIRST home PC, well to be honest iam not even sure if I have to buy a laptop or a home PC.

Let me tell you my req:

1) It has to be a good MUSIC & MOVIE player
2) Good speed & robust in nature
3) Good design
4) A nice Monitor - I am not sure what size would be reqd
5) The complete PC should be robust with commendable speed & I should not have any upgrading desires for the next couple of years :)

Please suggest a good laptop or a PC to me, consider me as a novice in this. My budget is also not too great should be available for not more than 35K INR. I am based out of Blore, pl suggest a nice shop where I can approach

Thanks for the time & support!

Cheers, Nitin

Hi Everybody
I need some advice on building a PC for a student of 3D animation. I know he uses Maya 3D and 3Ds Max. Are there any special system requirements as for gaming PCs listed above, like 3D graphics card of a particular capability or an optimum amount of RAM?
Thanks in advance

guys, i think its high time, some kind hearted member (or OP himself) puts forth a new guide for feb 2010. It has been a long time and I'm sure both the components and the prices have changed a lot :ohyeah:
