A high-pitched alarm which cannot be heard by adults has been hijacked by schoolchildren to create ringtones so they can get away with using phones in class.

Techno-savvy pupils have adapted the Mosquito alarm, used to drive teenage gangs away from shopping centres.

They can receive calls and texts during lessons without teachers having the faintest idea what is going on

The alarm, which has been praised by police, is highly effective because its ultra-high sound can be heard only by youths but not by most people over 20.

Schoolchildren have recorded the sound, which they named Teen Buzz, and spread it from phone to phone via text messages and Bluetooth technology.

Now they can receive calls and texts during lessons without teachers having the faintest idea what is going on.

A secondary school teacher in Cardiff said: 'All the kids were laughing about something, but I didn't know what. They know phones must be turned off during school. They could all hear somebody's phone ringing but I couldn't hear a thing.

'One of the other children told me all about it later. I couldn't be too cross, because it shows resourcefulness.'

The Mosquito technology is said to play on a medical phenomenon called presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss.

It is thought to begin at 20 and first affect the highest frequencies – 18 to 20kHz.

The device was developed by Merthyr Tydfil-based Compound Security.

Boss Howard Stapleton said: 'I think it is a giggle. A teacher would be able to hear the sound only from 1m away. Teenagers could hear it from much further away.'

Here is a sample file :

(Just rename the extension from .zip to .mp3)

To generate the tone yourself do the following :

open Audacity...

Generate > Tone

Waveform: Sine

Frequency: 18000.00

Amplitude: 1.00

*generate tone*

PS : Btw on my system i can hear the sound ;)

will giv this a shot ..

EDIT :

bt i hvnt got the audacity thing installed..

i think it ll be very nice if ppl like dippy / nikhil or anyone else can upload it to rapidshare or smthin like that... that wd be nice ... many ppl wd be able to try it straightaway ..

I can hear it on my comp also....anyone here who cant hear it??

The oldies :P.... Eazy, DJ, Medpal :P no offence meant to you guys :)

Continuous high frequency like that can overheat and finally blow up the tweeters of speakers. Run it for a long time at ur own risk :P.

Edit: forgot... most computer speakers would probably not be able to generate the tone in the first place.

lol..goto folder options and enable "show file extension"
then u'll be able to see the .zip.. change it to .mp3

i guess even my grandpa wd be able to hear it ... its so damn normal ..

prolly i am puttin the speakers a lil bit too high .. any recommended volume settings too ..? or i keep it where i can hear it at , the minimum possible limit and then give the dare to the SENIOR citizens..?? (sounds logical to me .. :) )

(thnx nikhil ..)

Remeber that the geyser has to be more than a metre away.

Why not?? Please explain :P
Cos most of them don't have a frequency range more than 12-13KHz or so. If it has a tweeter, it'd probably extend to the limit audible frequencies but with only a single full range driver, there's absolutely no chance :).

but most guys are able to hear it......

And I just need to play the .mp3 file right??

Well if the speaker is poorly made, it'll end up replacing the 18KHz signal with whatever the highest frequency it can produce instead of silence :P.... Same reason why bass sounds boomy on some subs :P.
