Telegram may get banned in India.

Does anyone have any information/opinion on this? or can they just restrict access +/- ban +/- delete all the accounts with +91 mobile?
Telegram isn't going to ban any specific country's number but govt here can order telcos to prevent the otp from coming in via telegram servers to prevent login but there should be workarounds for that too if TG is really determined.

This feels like a witch hunt. Those who want to broadcast hateful content will always find another way to do the same while those looking for disturbing content or pornography will always find another place.

It is said that the problem with Telegram is that they do nothing except blocking the group, no action is ever taken on users. Is this true?

Actually, nothing much is done even for blocking the groups even after multiple reporting by users & that's the main issue. That is why TG is the preferred choice of scammers & typical criminals over WA because WA permaban them much more quickly after just being reported few times.

Looks like a deep state attack for not complying with the big guy's rules. They will try to make a example out of telegram and then musk (X.com) will be next. If the Indian government was smart, they would support telegram instead of opening new "investigations" but we all know government (and many people) in India get a boner when the topic of banning thing's comes up. We just love saying ban this ban that instead of working on solutions at a root level.

There is no such thing as deep state, only typical politicians doing what they think will get them more votes in next election. TG had it coming for a long time now given their total disregard for content moderation. Musk also disregard moderation but not as much as TG & that too mostly limited to political topics.

Can you define content moderation? Does it include three letter agencies like CIA and FBI having you on speed-dial to censor on demand?

It means if you create a profile/post like "download latest XYZ movie here for free" or "buy the miracle weight reduce drug here" & 4-5 ppl report it then it gets deleted within a few hours/day. CIA & FBI don't have free time to waste on "censor" when there is always some terrorist/lunatic planning an attack sitting in their home.

TG is easy to do any shit, no tracking no way to know and usernames can be anything from complex binaries to dots and with the liberty to delete entire history from both ends its even difficult to track and trace.
It should be banned for no. of reasons.
I'm a member of few great groups would say but sadly meaningful groups are diminishing due due to more pornographic and the usual spam groups increasing on a daily basis.

It will be interested to see what will eventually happen to those who migrated or say duped forums and entirely shifted their base to TG..esp. xda! The kids developing roms will have so many nightmares.. The seen will be like ants looking for their hill!

Telegram is the only messaging service that does not comply with the 3 lettered agencies. Just because Telegram is used for bad purposes by bad people, banning it is not the solution. Those people will move to some other messaging services.

The FOSS community's primary communication platform has become Telegram with Matrix as the secondary. If Telegram is banned, then everyone will move to Matrix and so will the bad people.

They will return back to XDA. Simple

There's another conspiracy theory. Durov got himself arrested by French authorities to stay safe from Russian agents.
It's funny no one has taken this comment seriously and have started ranting about freedom of speech etc.

Durov was given French citizenship in 2021. The warrant against Durov was issued in March 2024. And he still flew to France.

There's no way this isn't case of defection. He's most likely going to chill in French prison till the situation in Ukraine is resolved.

"Really bad people" don't use telegram either, they use signal & matrix. It is the "middle bad ppl crowd" that most use TG & the reason why TG is facing issues. Just one simple example, finding latest pirated material is easier nowadays on TG than public torrents. Also, signal & matrix are not very user friendly & requires a minimum level of tech knowhow to use them which effectively excludes majority of general population incl "middle bad ppl crowd".

FOSS community moved to TG because they understood that to compete with likes of MS they need something simple for avg joe to use & that is why Matrix will never become that platform because it is not something a avg joe or for that matter an above avg joe can use easily. Discord is the closest thing to ease of use & it already is used by many FOSS communities but it is much more regulated than TG nowadays.

Perhaps Telegram is now in the bullseye because of its simplicity and popularity... And NOT because it "lacks content moderation and censorship rules".
Anyone can join. Anonymity exists. Thousands can be part of a group.
Then comes the legally questionable content and its easy and quick availability.
Telegram has rubbed many the wrong way. It is an open playground that mocks the rules of the gatekeepers.

WA is similarly simple & popular but you don't see hundreds of thousands of channels there paddling pirated content & much worse stuff.

It is more like an open jungle right in the middle of a city with no rules. Obviously it will rub many the wrong way.

Those seeking to obtain content of questionable legality, and "much worse stuff", have MANY platforms and ways. They aren't restricted to Telegram.
Platforms like Signal and Matrix too fall in this category. Is anyone going after them? And then there are Millions of websites for such purposes too.
Going after Telegram is futile as it won't stop the flow and consumption of "stuff".
