For users switching to macOS from windows and linux, there are a lot of things that may not seem to work (like ctrl+c ctrl+v alt+F4)

Or they may not find their favorite application ported to macOS

This thread hopes to be a central repo for all mac funda for the ignorant

Ill start off:

When safari opens couple of popups...what is the key-combo required to move between the popups and other browser windows?

What is the shortcut to maximise/minimise?

What's the best free app for IRC?

I thought this was on a *nix base...is there anything like yum/apt-get? Where are the repos set?

What's the best torrent client?

Don't tap/doubletap work? Im forced to use the click to select text...
 
1)To open a new tab in safari press cmd+t and to view all the different browser pages y dont u four finger swap the trackpad resulting in expose.Thats all ull need
2)I myself use vuze as it allows me to transcode videos.Also transmission is a viable alternative and endemic to the mac os.Another neat thing about transmission is that suppose u download a music file , it automatically goes to itunes.
3)to minimize cmd+m or the yellow button but the red button by default doesn't maximize itself.To change this function dowload rightzoom
 
For torrents you can also try using uTorrent. There is a Mac beta available. Personally I found uTorrent (Win) to be the best client on both Windows and Linux. Transmission on Linux was ok, but I still found uTorrent on Wine to be better.

As for package management, there is fink (port of apt), but never had occasion to use it myself.

Use 2 fingers to scroll around the window

Pinch to zoom in/out

Swipe 4 fingers up to show desktop

Swipe 4 fingers down to show all windows

Lack of rightclick is irritating

Mac messenger=Adium

IRC client = colloquy
 
^^ it is (2finger tap=right click) Just try out.
else keep one finger on trackpad and tap with the other..
Else check in system preferences>trackpad settings.

Exposé/Dock Exposé is all you need.

There are many ways around this.

>Cmd+M minimizes the current app and you can again invoke Expose to bring it front.

>Or you can click cmd+H to hide the current app and unhide it via Cmd+Tab.

>The little green dot on the top left corner of every window is the zoom button, its actually pretty smart, it basically resizes every window according to its content rather than just exploding it to fit the whole screen.

uTorrent beta for Mac is pretty nice but compared to Transmission it falls flat. UI inconsistencies coupled with bad design and few annoying bugs makes it almost unusable for me.

PS: This thread should go under the MacOS section. Mods, please do the needful.:)

As Styx pointed out, right click is disabled by default, just go to System Prefs > Trackpad and enable it.

And yes, you forgot the Four Finger left/right swipe which works like Alt+Tab

As for Torrents, go with Transmission.
 
Appcleaner is pretty good to 'uninstalling' apps

What's a good way to stream movies and music from my desktop to lappy?

Shared folders?
