Dude google first then ask here.

To jailbreak or unlock iPhone 3GS you need to know the bootrom version first and then it depends on which iOS are you running.

For the rest you'll have to google. Pwnage and Spirit should be out soon, but you need to know their requirements and guides.

The only thing to be careful about after your first jailbreak and unlock is not to upgrade until a solution for the new iOS is found. There are no disadvantages besides these that I know of.

If yours is not on iPhone 4, try spirit or blackra1n daybreak tool. Do backup the content before trying the jailbreak.
 
it is 3.1.3 and 05.12.01 ! it is a 3Gs !

^yes you have to visit the site jailbreak.com directly from safari and it will take care of rest. Jailbreaked my iPhone4 yesterday using the same
 
yes you have to visit the site using iphone.And make sure you do it on your wifi.doesn't take long.jailbroke my phone in under 4 minutes.
 
ehh .. AFAIK .. all 3GS cannot be unlocked ! the ones having the old bootroams can be unlocked with untrasn0w ! am i right ?
 
No. AFAIK, the latest ultrasn0w supports all basebands! Save your shsh blobs on Cydia and upgrade to 4.x! Then jb using jailbreakme.com. And once you are jb, install ultrasn0w from cydia!

Is it necessary to jailbreak ?

Suppose I want to do only Unlock so I can use all SIM cards but want to use Original Apple OS & App Store apps only..

Dont want to take risk of cracked apps. Is it possible ?
 
Nope you can't unlock without jailbreaking first.jailbreaking doesn't mean you have to install all sorts of cracked apps if you don't want to.Just jailbreak by going to that website.it will install cydia on your phone and then using cydia you can download ultrasnow.You can continue using app store apps and itunes ...no issues with that./And ya it won't slow down your phone in any way either...unless you install themes and other memory hogging stuff from cydia

Jailbreak needed to install cydia .. cydia needed to unlock phone .. as simple as that !
 
Isnt there any tool available (Install on laptop) which will just unlock ?

Does iTunes/App store still allow to download original apps even if it detects that phone is jailbroken & running Cydia ?

No such standalone tool available to unlock directly, jailbreak is the first step. What's ur concern with jailbreak ?

You can download apps from AppStore even after your iphone is jailbreak-ed and unlocked

There is soon going to be a software called LIMERA1N ! which will help you unlock .. though it'll jailbreak the phone too .. through your lappy ! but not so sure of its date of release !
