My graduation present for myself is here! Got an iPad Mini 6th gen to replace my Kindle Paperwhite (not the one in pictures, which is a 10th Gen Kindle to give an idea about the relative size). Debated long and hard about the ideal replacement from my 10th gen Paperwhite and after about a week of research, settled on a used iPad Mini.
I was primarily looking for a larger screen and USB-C, along with a more powerful device (for the occasional web browsing) and while there are e-rink devices which do that (was particularly interested in the PocketBook Era and Boox Go 7 Color), they cost either the same or not much less than a used iPad Mini - which made the decision easier.
Reading at night with minimum brightness and blue light filter (set to nearly 80% on the slider) is still not easy on the eyes as the Kindle, but is definitely better than an AMOLED phone; and actually not that much worse than a front-lit eink panel. Have not noticed any changes to my sleeping pattern for the last week that I've had it, which I'm taking as a good sign but any other pointers are of course appreciated.
On another note, I think this is probably the best device that Apple has released in the last decade. I don't know why exactly, but I was just not expecting it to be so compact, small, lightweight yet so powerful and just perfect for what it is! It's the perfect companion tablet for someone who already owns a 12"-14" convertible ultrabook and a large phone. Planning to get an Apple Pencil soon to use it for notes and ideation since it's very similar in size to a compact notebook. I personally got a great deal at $275 for the iPad Mini, Folio case and AppleCare+ till June 2025 - which is only $5 more than what a new Boox Go 7 Color would have cost me, and I was not comfortable spending that much money on a single purpose device. Absolutely amazing device (apart from the non-expandable 64GB of storage and no headphone jack, but at least it has a USB-C port).
