This was what i had with normal PP::

I ran the same single RAW file through photomatix, followed by PP::

note::excuse me, but this 2nd picture is a victim of jpg compression, and needs NR too :)

Pappu,

Interesting use of lines, just a small suggestion though, a fg blur, if not managed properly can be distracting. Since there's no subject in the frame to lock the eyes on, they usually set on the OOF fg and hence cause a bit of uneasiness. I know the photo demonstrates the processing, but I'd prefer that happening on an awesome image :). Hope you take it in the right spirit.

^^ ok i had to read that twice over to understand :D

but what I catch from that is that I should have had all of it in focus yes?

I am a focus n00b to be honest, dont know how to get it right :)

I've read a lot bout it, F8/focus to infinity and whatever, but i cant do it right. Any tips for the same? I dont know how to hit infinite focus manually, coz the lens focus ring rotates beyond that as well.

Pappu, that's a nice effect. I should give photomatrix a try...

@Hellwrath, I may be getting it wrong, but after the PP HDR, arent the clouds the focus point?

the focus point doesnot change :)

But you can manage to get sharper edges on the clouds for sure

Lol, sorry my bad. I wasn't too clear. As a rule (which can be broken, depending on what you're trying to convey), a foreground out of focus is avoided. Eyes like to move in the frame from one focus point to the out of focus areas and then out of frame. A frame consists of Foreground, Subject and Background. In the above frame, the use of lines is nice, but it doesn't lead my eyes to a prominent subject and so my eyes come back to the start of the line which is in the foreground and is blurred. That kinda gives me a uncomfortable feeling is what I wanted to state :). Hope I was clear this time around.

Yep as Pappu suggested, focus point won't change. PP can be used only to enhance it :).

Here's a shot from me where I broke the fg blur rule, not the best of the shots, just to give an idea..

^^ Thats because you have not used a pure MF lens. You have 3 AF lenses where the focus ring is an afterthought with such lenses.

A manual focus lens focusing ring is much bigger and more importantly a much more precise. Also since its a large aperture everything is out of focus and your subject kinda 'pops' into focus. :)
