I don't have the phone with me at the moment since its still in transit. The reason why asked is because somehow I am getting a feeling that the hotspot won't work on it. My only reason for buying a new phone was to use the wifi hotspot :p Impulsive buying it was !

I'll report once I get the phone. Thanks for confirming that the hotspot works.

Hey can someone confirm if wifi tethering works on Focus ? I needed a wireless hotspot primarily and without confirming that thing, I bought the focus. Now I am confused. On checking I found that there are ways to turn it on (that sounded rather greek to me) and people were able to use it but some user comments suggested that in India they were unable to do it.Anyone using their focus as a wifi hotspot ? Kindly comment/assist.

wifi tethering is named as internet sharing in WP7 and yes focus has internet sharing facility but its blocked by default due to AT&T carrier, so you have two options:

1. custom rom: will take some time but custom roms come with a lot of features which will make it open like android instead of wp7/ios restrictions like bluetooth file transfer, file manager, directly installing ahem apps from phone browser etc etc..
[In short: install custom rom]

2. Windowbreak/jailbreak/rooting: you can go to WindowBreak by WindowsPhoneHacker on your focus and it will automatically jailbreak your phone, then you can install/sideload apps from pc, the wp7 apps are in .xap format, install this xap [XAP] Internet Sharing + Interop Unlock all-in-one for Samsung Phones - xda-developers and you will get internet sharing, apart from this you can install many other useful homebrew apps like wp7 root tools, marketplace config, bluetooth file transfer etc etc.
[In short: jailbreak your phone and sideload an app]

I am quite accustomed to the custom ROMs scene on the android platform. Tried many while I had the XCD35 and Samsung NOTE. Windows 7 platform is kinda new to me. Have used the focus briefly last year and I faintly recall now what did my play-field looked like :D

Can you guide me to some custom ROMs ? That way I'll be able to remove all the AT&T junk and other useless stuff. Any recommendations?

I hope its as safe as with android. Things are not easy with WP7, as I feel (might be wrong).

i am not using custom rom as i would like to get the official full 7.8 update as and when it comes and the other features like wifi internet sharing, root access, custom tile colours, ahem games, bluetooth file transfer and other such homebrew apps can be used just by jailbreak/windowbreak.

Regarding custom roms: The instructions to follow are on xda just like any android custom rom and first let your samsung focus arrive so that i can suggest you a compatible rom as there are two different focus versions due to some manufacturing botch up by samsung: rev1.3 and rev 1.4 which can be seen by removing the battery of the phone.

The Rev 1.3 is better one as it supports more custom roms and also will receive faster updates from microsoft whereas Rev 1.4 has to wait for around one month to get the latest update and has less custom roms.

Considering that my primary requirement is wifi hotspot, I too can wait for the official 7.8 rollout. Any information on when it'll be out? I heard that it'll be a great upgrade and not like tango.

i dont think 7.8 will be out anytime soon as it will be released some months after wp8 release, so i am guessing between december-january, also it may carry only some features like new homescreen, data monitoring, data saving features etc.. so if you do get Rev 1.3( beta 7.8 custom rom is available for this) and can spend some time then it makes sense to go for custom rom now itself as you will be a bit enthusiastic after getting the phone and any custom rom(even 7.5 based custom rom) will have lot more features than the official 7.8 update.

In near future i am looking ahead to hands on either Nokia 920 or HTC windows 8 based models. They are just looking awesome to me!
I'll compare them once and then fix with one of them most probably.

Hi all,

I have recently bought my Nokia Lumia 710 and it is great so far. I am also looking forward to 7.8 update. I am also trying to develop a VoIP app for WP7. I do not know about you but in my point of view a VoIP app would be a great additon to the existing features. I am doing the development according to the followings (Ozeki C# VoIP SDK - A SIP SDK for software developers). There is a guide and code snippets so I belive the development time could be shortened according to the instructions. In case some of you would like to have an own VoIP app for your Windows Phone then this is a good guide to have a look. I hope you will find this advice useful. Later it might be possible that I will switch to Lumia 920, it is a brilliant phone.

If I'm not mistaken MS has not opened any APIs for the kind of networking required for VoIP on WP7 so far, which is why we don't have Skype on it yet. Anyone got the latest scoop on this?

oops, really? OK :) the API must have been added in WP 7.5, i thought it would come in 7.8...

And I need to check out skype then! Sadly WP7 devices don't have front facing cams, none of them do, right?
