ALONE IN THE DARK

Published by : Atari
Developed by : Eden Studios
Genre : Adventure
Number of Players : 1
Release Date : US TBA 2006
Also Available On : PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Taking the fear to a new level, the next-gen Alone in the Dark features the macabre style of the series played with new gameplay mechanics and a broader-reaching, action-packed play style. Explore fully-interactive realtime worlds, interacting with physics and roaming the wide-open, fright-filled environments.

While the Resident Evil horror series popularized the term "survival horror," it was actually a game from the early 1990s called Alone in the Dark that laid the foundations for third-person action adventure games based on exploring creepy environments full of deadly monsters and other assorted dangers. And yet, the next game in the series, which will also be called Alone in the Dark, is being created by Eden Studios--a developer that openly acknowledges last year's Resident Evil 4 as being one of the best horror games in years. Resident Evil 4 took the risk of changing around that series' perennial control scheme and switched the focus to action over walking slowly and carefully rationing bullets. Like Resident Evil 4, the new Alone in the Dark will put much more focus on action, as well as on an intriguing new narrative style.

E3 2006: Crysis Hands-on
Crytek hands us the keys to the Ferrari and we enjoy the ride.

May 10, 2006 - Crysis is a freaking amazing looking game. You want next-gen? This is it. Character models, foliage interaction and density, explosions, weapons models, lighting… good lord these guys at Crytek are some talented guys. They have the game up and running on DirectX 10 and brought two different levels showing off a couple of different aspects of the experience. Not only did they have the carrier level that we saw at the pre-E3 day at EA but also the jungle level that was shown as part of the GDC demo. They also let us step in and take the reigns to shoot some commies.

While we've already written in the past about the level on the carrier where players will have to battle through a gigantic ship slowly sinking into the ocean with the help of some unfriendly alien visitors, it's worth mentioning again simply because it looked so good on these screens at black levels that made things easier to see. It was clear that the smoke and fire on deck of the ship were affected by the scream of the Hunter meaning the game was running using DirectX 10, which is pretty exciting.
Up close like this, textures were very crisp and the lighting inside the burning ship cast a beautiful glow on the cabin which was wonderful. This was also a great opportunity to really see some of the alien stuff up close along with their weapons effects and explosions. The aliens shown floated through the air and shot a couple of different types of weapons including a freeze ray. More importantly, when they explode, they go out in serious style. The explosion warps the surrounding area distorting all of the light and smoke in one of the most spectacular effects I've seen in PC gaming.
Now, the jungle level is a thousand times different than the ship level visually and in terms of gameplay. Where the ship gave a pretty straightforward and clean look to it (even with all of the rubble and fires) the jungle was jam packed with stuff. Bushes, trees, and rocks are normal, but the amount of underbrush was just ridiculous. It means finding enemies can be difficult, but it also means that they're going to have trouble finding you as well if you hide in a good spot and go quiet for a minute. It makes for some intense and freaky gun fights, but also ones that at this level do seem to be pretty fair for jungle warfare where other jungle shooters have included enemies that were a little too aware to make for a fun game. The only sad thing about the experience is that it was so loud in the conference that it was hard to take advantage of sound in the battle.

The level begins with the main character being brought into the jungle area to investigate the "sphere" and figure out what the hell is going on in the area. At this point in the game, the North Koreans and the US are still fight against each other as the Koreans protect the frozen area around the crash site of the asteroid/ship. The area is enclosed in the spherical energy field that's causing all kinds of problems with the weather.
Upon being let out of the transport, it's almost an immediate trek to the first area where some enemies are hanging out. Right off the bat it was a good idea to break out some of the different types of options for the weapons and exo-suit. In order to switch between the different options, it just took a click of the middle mouse button (default controls) and then move the mouse to the option in the heads-up display. My first choice was to switch to use the armor setting of the exo-suit to provide a bit more protection against bullets flying from the jungle every which way.
The second choice was to switch from that heads-up display to the weapon modifications. This clever options display has the player character hold the weapon up sideways so that its side is facing the player's view. Overlayed across the weapon are different option slots. For instance, at the tip of the weapon is an option to add a silencer while underneath the muzzle is another box with the option to add a grenade launcher. What's also good about it is that the player can still be mobile while this menu is open so if an enemy comes along and starts popping some shots off, it's easy enough to start running.

The silencer and other implements can be pretty important as the AI in the game is very responsive at this stage in development. They really mean business. Taking the silencer off and shooting a few shots off quickly drew all of the enemies in the area to respond to the possible threat. They'll immediately begin searching because of suspicious sounds or bodies found on the ground. I tried to leave a present for them by shooting a gas canister on the back of the jeep in the area, but once the gas spread all over and flames pushed out from the truck, they must have realized the danger and backed off. When the jeep exploded, I was still left with four very aggressive soldiers trying to kill me.
One of the really freaking things about playing a game with motion blur in it, especially when the gigantic monitor is two inches from your face, is that every little thing that looks like a soldier can freak you out. The soldiers aren't shy about moving positions to get find a better firing position or to flank you while their buddies are shooting at you. They don't just jog from place to place either, they sprint to cover and run hunched over like a guy trying not to get shot.
In fact, what we've seen of animation so far is very good. Movements are very natural from what we've seen so far. Mixed with the high quality character models, it's easy to get sucked into the gameplay and forget about the throngs of people behind you watching you get shot. Speaking of which, I'm pretty happy to report that those heads we've seen in screenshots really are pretty much what are in the game. The character heads can be frighteningly good. I didn't see a lot of emotion animated in them, but even so, they're quite detailed.

Eventually after fighting through the jungle, tossing grenades around, tearing apart some jungle trees (the foliage reaction is pretty good but looks like it's really kept to certain types of trees), killing a few enemies, and exploring some of the beautiful environment, the sphere loomed ahead. Entering it triggered a short load that pushed the scene inside the sphere and in the frozen wasteland of the blasted parts of the island chain. You've actually seen the screenshot of the scene that appeared, this was only rendered in real time.
All this short chance to play the game did was make me more amped to play a longer version of the game that I don't have to stop playing. Crytek already proved that their tech is amazing with the GDC demo and now I'm once again a believer in their style of single player shooter.
If you haven't done so already, make sure to check out the gameplay videos taken off-screen on the show floor. Hopefully we'll get some more direct-feed soon, but these should do for now.
