Ubuntu 10.10 - Maverick Meerkat ~Discussion Thread~

The successor to the long-awaited Ubuntu 10.04, Maverick Meerkat's stable version will be released on October 10, 2010.

Ubuntu 10.10 Release Schedule :-

June 3rd, 2010 - Alpha 1 released;

July 1st, 2010 - Alpha 2 released;

August 5th, 2010 - Alpha 3 released;

September 2nd, 2010 - Beta released;

September 30th, 2010 - Release Candidate;

October 10th, 2010 - Final release of Ubuntu 10.10

To start with, here are some updates:-

Aptitude Removed from Ubuntu 10.10

While many believed "aptitude" will soon replace "apt-get" given the fact that it's a lot "smarter", it seems that's not the case in Ubuntu - in fact it's quite the opposite: aptitude has been removed from Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat though it is still available in the repositories.

This comes as a surprise, especially since Debian officially endorses aptitude over apt-get. Apparently the reason for this is to free up some 13-14 mb of space from the CD.

There was an attempt to remove aptitude a few releases back, but it was saved by the fact that it didn't take too much space on the CD. But for some unknown reason, the meerkats didn't like aptitude so it was removed from Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Won't Run On Processors Below i686

If you're planning on using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat on a computer with a processor older than i686, well... you can't.

Ubuntu 10.10 will be dropping support for i386-i586 processors so it can take advantage of the i686 optimizations. Apparently this has been discussed and confirmed at UDS-M.

But there seem to be some issues with this: even some new processors which are especially designed for low power consumption are i586. Such a processor is the Geode LX800 - a pretty new processor for which a bug has been filled on Launchpad but which most probably won't be fixed since Geode LX800 is a i586 processor.

Ubuntu 10.10 To Ship With Firefox 3.6

Well here is something I for one wasn't aware of: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat will ship with Firefox 3.6. That's not because there's something wrong with Firefox 4.0, but because the first Firefox 4.0 release candidate is scheduled for October, the same month Ubuntu 10.10 will be released.

This is been confirmed by Ubuntu developer Chris Coulson, although a confirmation wasn't actually necessarily if you look at the Firefox release schedule.

But of course, Ubuntu 10.10 could have been released with a beta/rc version of Firefox. If they did it for a long term release (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS was released with Firefox 3.0 beta 5), why not do it again for 10.10 since Firefox 3.6 is so slow compared to other browsers?

F-Spot has been replaced with Shotwell Photo Manager

New Ubuntu Software Center

One of the most important change in Ubuntu 10.10 will be the revamped design for the Ubuntu Software Center. Here is how it looks:

New Sound Menu

Sound Menu have been updated tool, buttons have been updated to merge with theme and font have so song informations can fit.

Also playlist support and scrubber have been removed.

Been running it since about alpha 2 and already looking forward to Natty 11.04 now :D

Linux distros are getting boring these days - nothing to do - no issues to go hunting for solutions or mucking about to fix them...

Yesterday it gained the new Indian Rupee Sign, the which will make 10.10 the first operating system to include it by default.

If I install the 10.10 version on my Netbook(Asus 1000H with 1GB RAM and Intel Atom Processor) tomorrow, will I be able to upgrade to the final release on the 10th without any problems? It has been running on Linux Mint Gloria (Ubuntu 9.04) for too long now. Moreover, I have not been able to install the latest version of Firefox on it.

AFAIK, there will be no problem whatsoever.

^^ It's Release Candidate and not the Final Release. :ashamed:

I'll post link of Final Release's torrent as soon as I get them.
yeah it is RC, the final is not out yet !
will be out at 10:10 GMT

Downloaded and ran 10.10 in live mode, had moved to 10.04.1 a month back only so not that much interested to install now.

The cosmetic touchups are nice. Canonical seems to be trying hard to make noob friendly. Most of the technical stuffs are being hidden and more clicky style is being adopted, Synaptic package manager will be geeky now compared to Software Center for a new guy. I am not sure what to say as its good or bad but its good going for a newbie. Some oldies may get bit bored as there is not much work required to get the system working...lol :P

Well me too :) Maverick bootup is a bit faster for me, but many others are reporting much slower compared to Lucid.

is it just me or is the bootup lightning fast ?
Depends on what you're comparing it with, but yes it is fast in general...

Definitely some performance boost in the boot up department, installed this on my dell studio 15. All it needed was the wireless drivers and my video card drivers and it was good to go. Loving it and posting this via 10.10 :)
